Library, Wednesday [ 03/19 ]

Adah hadn't limped into the library in the best of moods this morning, but, on the other, useless, mostly dead hand, it wasn't the worst of them, either. Somewhere towards the middle, divergent slightly to the left. Just how she was mostly used to it, even with unwanted multiplying pets into consideration.

Adah's eyebrows also lifted; at least she knew that she could depend on the fact that one was uncontrolled by the nature of her usual asymmetry. "Following up the lead I picked out," she commented against the unbidden spread of her smirk. "What did you think about it? About where, exactly, were you sent? Africa's a pretty big continent."

"We were in...Mali, I think?" Lee said. "Sahara desert, I do remember. Lots and lots of desert. It was hot. And that sun was just beating down and it wouldn't stop and there were bandits."

With a light chuckle, Adah wrinkled her nose a little. "The Congo, if it's even still called that, was just south of the Sahara, so we had fewer desert and more jungle, but no bandits, I have to admit. Instead, we had guerrilla armies of children armed with stolen rifles." She punctuated the comparison with a look that, considering how the bandits were clearly not as good of shots as those children, that her situation won despite all the desert in his.

"I got caught in a trap," he said proudly.

Adah tilted her head, frowning in a slightly confused manner at him.

"Wouldn't it have been better if you could say you avoided getting caught in a trap?"

"Well, me getting caught in the trap lured some old guy out of hiding and he gave us some information on the statue," Lee said. "So, it was good that I did!"

"Leave it to you," Adah said, shaking her head with a tinge of admiration in her voice, "to have even falling into a trap turning out well for you."

"I know," he said, smiling and spread his arms. "I did good. And I was safe besides the whole trap thing."

After watching him for a quiet moment with a wry, contemplative smirk, Adah asked, "Well, what sort of trap was it?"

"I stepped wrong and ended up upside down, dangling from my foot," he explained. "Cool, huh?"

"Hanging upside down from what?" Adah asked, still smirking. "You were in the desert, and, I swear, that's a classic jungle booby trap..."

"Well, the trap was in a settlement," he explained, "with people hanging around. I stepped in it and up I went."

"Literally hanging?" Adah might just be being a brat at this point. "Shouldn't that have been a clue to you?"

"Literally hanging," he said. "And well, clue or not, I was too busy trying to get myself done to really notice."

Well, she didn't actually think...

A light laugh slipping out from her, Adah gave her head a light shake again. "You almost make me wish I was there to have seen it. Almost."

"Worse things have happened to me," he said and grinned. "It was actually good, getting out and being active like that. I haven't been out in the field like that in a long time."

"Good," Adah gave a nod, "although I'm tempted to resent you for the option of being out in the field like that, but I won't."

"I had to do something," he said and shrugged. "And it was far away from those statues, after all."

Adah's head ducked in considering acceptance of that point. "That is true," she said. "So, well, lucky for people like me for people like you around to go do stuff and then I can just sit it out. After, of course, the subsequent stress heart attack. That was, sadly, just about the pinnacle of my involvement in it this time, but, hey. No coma this time, right?"

"No coma is a good thing," he said quietly. "Sorry for my part in the stress heart attack, though."

Adah's eyes dropped for a moment before she could get herself to respond. She stayed the path of the light quips, but not without a moment of biting down on her lip as she drew in a bit of a breath. It was just so much easier to deal with and she'd only just started to get over all of that, anyway, without needing to be reminded and dragged through it again.

"Whole lot of good all that did me, anyway. I should have save it for this weekend, when you were traipsing out around the desert instead of hiding out in your room. Did you mention anything to the Lieutenant yet? What will she say, you disobeying orders?"

"Dunno," Lee said, shrugging. "I haven't seen her yet. But, I made sure I was safe. No unnecessary risks, no angel statues. I promise, I was safe."

Adah hadn't realized that she was biting her lower lip again as she looked at him, at first, and, when she did, she stopped abruptly, pressing her lips together as if to safeguard against doing it again. Why the hell was she starting to feel that pang of worry again, after the fact? It didn't make any sense, because he was there and he was fine, but just thinking about it...really thinking just...

"Good," she managed to get out, and left it at that, and concluding that she should really just get used to how nothing made much sense to her when it came to him.

"I brought you back some sand," he said, trying to be funny. "It's good sand. Very, very tan sand."

He didn't have any sand.

"I didn't realize sand could tan," Adah said, trying a light smile. "Last I knew, they lacked the proper pigments." She tilted head, then, and leaned over the desk a little in an obvious attempt to get a closer look at him. "You seemed to have picked up a bit of one, though...Also, what the hell am I going to do with sand? I've probably got enough dust from Kilanga still hanging in my clothes to last me a lifetime of African sand."
