Library [3.14]

Karal wasn't alone when he opened the library this morning. Altra was walking ahead of him, Evey was walking beside him, and he was grateful for their company.

He made sure Evey was happily settled in the stacks with a pile of books and a cup of tea, then set about opening the library.

Anemone waved at Karal as she slipped in quietly, back for another day of research.

Not wanting to interrupt anyone else's research (well...except hers, clearly), and since he found himself pretty much capable of doing little more than staring at things and wondering why he wasn't any good at this sort of thing, A.J. decided to take a break and flick a small ball of paper toward Anemone, because he was there and he could say hi and maybe see how she was doing with all this.

Anemone had been trying to bribe one of the Pi-rats into finding her a new book when she was mysteriously hit by a paper ball. Only not so mysteriously, because she could back-track the trajectory pretty easily.

"Bored," she announced, abandoning her research to flop down next to A.J. "I think my brain is leaking out my ears."

A.J. gave Anemone a small, tight lipped sort of smile as he tilted his head in a way to better inspect her ears. "Look unleaked so far to me," he offered. "Hard to tell with all that hair there, though." The smile grew a bit. "But I hear you. Don't even really know what to look for."

"I should have you braid my hair, keep it back so that the brains doesn't get tangled in it," she joked. "Right now I'm sorting stuff into two piles, trash and not-trash. It's dull, but someone needs to do it."

A.J.'s head tilted again, this time the other way, as if to consider the two piles. "Want help?" A.J. said. "With the sorting, I mean. Although, hey, if you really do think it'll help, I'm all for the braiding. At least I know I wouldn't screw that part up."

Anemone just laughed and poked at him lightly. "Don't be silly, you won't screw anything up, and every pair of hands helps. We'll be the spam filter for the other researchers. Think of it this way, the more stuff we eliminate as being a dead-end, the faster it helps the big brains get our friends back."

"True," A.J. said, shifting a little, elbow on the table as his hand scratched at his head. "How can you tell for sure if someone's a dead-end, though?"

"If it's a text that talks about how nice, sweet, and wonderful angels are, I toss it, because it's probably not about our angels. The rest of it is just instinct," she admitted. "I don't know much about theology or the paranormal. Or if you wanted something less estoric, you could flip through books on strange disappearances, just see if you spot anything that might be similar, and bookmark it. Books that don't have anything, you just push off to the side."

A.J. nodded, listening carefully. "I think I could probably scan through disappearances without too much of a problem. The, uh...symptoms of what we're looking for are pretty easy to spot..."

Anemone scampered over to her table, grabbing a stack of books before returning. "Here, we can work on these, then. Do you mind if I sit with you? I'm tired of researching alone."

A.J. shook his head. "Of course I don't. I got tired of researching by myself, too, that's the whole reason I threw paper at you in the first place." He gave her a light smile. "We'll work better in pairs. And, what with the problem in the first place..."

"Pairs is safer, for everything," she said. "Cimorene is missing, and I don't like being in an empty room right now, even with Gulliver there. It's too creepy. I'm surprised Miss Zoe hasn't assigned everyone to the buddy system."

"That actually wouldn't be a bad idea," A.J. muttered, flipping open one of the books, but he mostly only just frowned at it. "I know what you mean about the empty room. Troy's been gone since...well, he stopped coming to the room since Monday. I don't know if he's been gone or not since then; I just was figuring he was spending a lot of time with Sky. And I don't even have a Gulliver. Been taking care of Berthold for River, but...spending time with him, for me, just ends up in a lot of pain."

"Bribe him. I think River told me once that he likes ice cream and clothing." Anemone grabbed one book off the stack and started flipping through it. "You should both come down to my room, or I can come up. We can watch dumb movies, and eat junk food, and pretend that everything's peachy. Denial can be a beautiful thing."

"Yeah, she told me about the ice cream and clothing, too," A.J. said, flipping through the pages a bit himself. He was looking for pictures. He felt pictures might be a good place to start as far as he was concerned. "It didn't help me much. I think maybe the problem is I wear too much clothing and he, like Adah's stupid rabbit, just likes my sweater too much..."

"...I don't know about us both," he continued, "because if I even made the slightest attempt at moving that octopus...tentacle...thing, you guys may as well mark me as disappeared, too, because I'll be dragged under that bed for God knows how long. I barely escaped yesterday..."

He trailed off with a slight pause. "But that does sound like a pretty good idea. I'll have to go check on Annette at some point; I haven't seen her, and the last time I did, we were screaming at each other so...yeah. On top of everything else, I got this big huge guilt thing on my shoulders."

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2008-03-14 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't think I know Annette, but if you're worried about her, she can watch movies with us too. We'll have a slumber party in my room." Anemone shoved her book away and grabbed a new one. "Do you want to talk about it, or should I not poke?"

[vanish for a bit, back in 4 hours or so!]

A.J. shook his head. "It's...really, really stupid in light of everything going on right now, so don't worry about it. I like your idea better. Just something...to distract us a little. I'll definitely extend the invitation to her, though."

If she was there.

A.J.'s eyes widened a little and his attention sharply turned back to the book.

"The more the merrier in this case, yeah?"
