Speaking in Tongues [7.03]

Karal smiled at everyone, hoping no one noticed the bunny prints on the library floor.

"I'm not sure if this will work, but I made lots of little paper squares," Karal put a box on the table, and some large squares of cardboard, with grids marked on them, "with the letters of the languages we've been learning. I thought we could get into pairs, or groups, and play a multi-language version of the game of scrabble."

Have at it! Sorry this is late, I was distracted by coffee woes.]

"I went to the O.Z., which is my very own country in the future, met someone I never thought I'd meet again, and was given quite a few books."

And there he'd covered all the parts that he'd want to share with someone he didn't really know all that well. The bit about the Mice practically considering Elphaba an ikon was... not something he would go into. Nor was his magic unless he was asked.

"You?"

"Went back home for Junior Cadet Training," said Hoshi. "Well, it wasn't exactly home, since I'm from Kyoto and the training was in San Francisco, but it was in my actual time period. We got to look at warp engines, traveled to Mars for a geological survey, and I got to talk to some Vulcan diplomats. Oh, and my commander had to ship out, so he gave me his puppy to take care of while he's off-planet."

"He gave you a puppy?" he asked, immediately interested. It'd have to wait until Andrew was better but... a puppy! Three dogs he could meet as soon as Andrew wasn't a rabbit.

Well, possibly.

"Yes," said Hoshi. "His name is Porthos and he's a beagle puppy. It's kind of nice having him around since I don't have a roommate this semester."

"I've been considering a pet, honestly," he said; after all, he's actually started some savings at this point. It meant he had the ability to take care of another being responsibly.

"The Witch used to have a dog, Killjoy. He was my best friend for the longest time."

No, he didn't remember watching Nick Chopper's axe make short work of his dog and the wolves. He didn't remember those things because he wouldn't let himself remember it. Because Killjoy had been his friend. He just remembered his very good dog.

"Porthos sounds very grand, though."

"Oh, he's too small to be very grand," said Hoshi, tempted to ask who the witch was but deciding against it. "I almost brought him with me today, since he comes to work with me too, but I decided against it. Someone told me Andrew turned into a bunny and I didn't want to take a chance."

Said bunny poked his head out of a little pocket that had been stitched to Liir's bag strap; the tiny bunny was, in fact, right next to his heart.

Liir smiled down at the fluffball.

"Hear we were talking about you, hmm?"

He looked up at Hoshi.

"You heard right, incidentally."

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh my goodness! Is that him?" asked Hoshi. "Thank goodness I've managed to avoid the whole animal transformation thing so far."

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Liir nodded as the little bunny looked expectantly (http://userpic.livejournal.com/72016096/13270951) at Hoshi.

Then the little ears flopped.

Liir stroked them gently.

"I have too. I'm honestly hoping this is the last time."

"At least he's got you to take care of him," said Hoshi, looking somber. "If it was me... I have friends here in Fandom, but I don't know if there's anyone who would do that for me."

The bunny looked up at Liir and Liir looked back down before scritching the little chin. That got him a happy coo.

Then he looked over at Hoshi, realizing that for once, he was the richer party in a way.

"I try," he said, not sure of what else to day. Then he looked down at the board.

"How does this work, incidentally?"

Ozian tradition: ignore awkwardly and keep going.

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, it's been a little while since I played something like this, but the general idea is that we take turns spelling out words on the board with the letters we have and the letters already on the board," said Hoshi, sorting through her squares until she came up with a word and placed it on the board.

"There, that's 'bunny' in Spanish. Now, you can see if you can make a work from the letters you already have, but you can also share one of the letters already on the board."

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
He looked down at his letters, wishing more of them were ones he knew, before he put down

OZMA

on the "o" at the end.

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a new word for Hoshi. "Ooh, what does that mean?" asked Hoshi, as she used the "a" at the end for ALPACA.

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's sort of a name, sort of a title," he said. "At least as well as I know. She was called Ozma, all of the rulers of Oz were. I wouldn't think it was a name after that many. Names are to tell apart, after all."

He pointed.

"Alpaca?" he asked curiously. "How do you tell if it's an Alpaca or an alpaca?"

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd go with alpaca with a small 'a' since it's an animal," said Hoshi. "They're from South America and they're kind of like llamas, but their wool is very soft and warm."

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
He looked at her curiously.

"Of course it'd be a small 'a' since it's an animal. But would it change things in the game if it were an Animal?"

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Hmmm," said Hoshi, thinking. "I don't believe it makes a difference as far as the game."

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"All right," he said, not quite sure how this all worked.

ANTHRACITE

It was easier to go off the ends.

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hoshi was glad that she hadn't covered scoring, mainly because she couldn't remember how the word scores were calculated.

ABALONE

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
E for Elphaba.

It flashed before his eyes for a moment before he shook it off.

IKON he put around the O.

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hoshi used the "E" in abalone for EIERCREME. "It's the German word for custard," she explained. "I work with a crazy German chef at the hotel."

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
MAUNT off of the "m".

"They're a kind of nun, specifically of the Unionist faith."

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't think I'm familiar with that one, though we have Buddhist monks at home. Religion isn't very big in my time," said Hoshi, using the last letter to spell TAMALE. "It's a kind of Mexican snack food," she explained.

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm familiar with them. They're in one of my books. I like to cook."

LEER

Like he hadn't heard that word often enough.

"And the Unionist faith is rather well-regarded. Most of the pagan ways are only kept by the old and those who don't mind being left behind."
