Speaking in Tongues [7.03]

Karal smiled at everyone, hoping no one noticed the bunny prints on the library floor.

"I'm not sure if this will work, but I made lots of little paper squares," Karal put a box on the table, and some large squares of cardboard, with grids marked on them, "with the letters of the languages we've been learning. I thought we could get into pairs, or groups, and play a multi-language version of the game of scrabble."

Have at it! Sorry this is late, I was distracted by coffee woes.]

"I'd go with alpaca with a small 'a' since it's an animal," said Hoshi. "They're from South America and they're kind of like llamas, but their wool is very soft and warm."

He looked at her curiously.

"Of course it'd be a small 'a' since it's an animal. But would it change things in the game if it were an Animal?"

"Hmmm," said Hoshi, thinking. "I don't believe it makes a difference as far as the game."

"All right," he said, not quite sure how this all worked.

ANTHRACITE

It was easier to go off the ends.

Hoshi was glad that she hadn't covered scoring, mainly because she couldn't remember how the word scores were calculated.

ABALONE

E for Elphaba.

It flashed before his eyes for a moment before he shook it off.

IKON he put around the O.

Hoshi used the "E" in abalone for EIERCREME. "It's the German word for custard," she explained. "I work with a crazy German chef at the hotel."

MAUNT off of the "m".

"They're a kind of nun, specifically of the Unionist faith."

"I don't think I'm familiar with that one, though we have Buddhist monks at home. Religion isn't very big in my time," said Hoshi, using the last letter to spell TAMALE. "It's a kind of Mexican snack food," she explained.

"I'm familiar with them. They're in one of my books. I like to cook."

LEER

Like he hadn't heard that word often enough.

"And the Unionist faith is rather well-regarded. Most of the pagan ways are only kept by the old and those who don't mind being left behind."

Hoshi used one of the E's for EGGPLANT.

"Really? I like to cook too. I've been meaning to cook for people, but I haven't had a chance in a while," she said.

"I'm in the third floor common room often enough if you'd like to come by," he said with a faint smile. "I don't really know exactly what I'm doing, since I like to experiment, but nothing's come out terribly bad."

"That's a floor I don't spend enough time on," said Hoshi. "I'll try to stop by sometime."

I haven't spent much time there myself, he thought to himself as he looked down at Andrew.

"It's a good floor," he said instead.

"I'm up on the fourth floor, and I've got a bunch of friends on the second floor, but I don't really stop in-between," said Hoshi. "Although once in a while there's something in the common room that you just can't miss."

"Like someone dancing?" he replied, thinking of the one boy who's dancing had been so... interesting.

"Oh, yes, I definitely caught that," said Hoshi, blushing as she remembered what happened later on that day.

He raised an eyebrow.

"Hmm?"

Re: Play scrabble

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I sort of kissed someone afterwards," said Hoshi.

"So did I," he said plainly. "It was a nice kiss. Zack's actually a very nice kisser, incidentally."

"Mine wasn't so bad either, but I ended up kissing someone who already had a boyfriend," said Hoshi.

He winced.

"That's unfortunate," he said. He'd read up on relationships most of the day. Gay male relationships, but some things remain the same.

"Did they mind?"

"Apparently he kind of liked the idea," said Hoshi, who was still confused by that. "I avoided him for a couple weeks, and then when I finally went to apologize, he was so frazzled over Valentine's Day that he totally missed what I was saying. I ended up getting him suit and tie to wear to the dance. His girlfriend loved it so much that she found me at the dance to thank me."

"Do you know Turtle and Jeff?" asked Hoshi. "Turtle is the one I kissed. She stopped by my room on the wrong day."
