Lawyering Up: Week 8, Wed, Period 2

"Change of plans," Nathan said as he passed out that week's handouts. "This week we're covering Estate law. Your estate is your possessions. When you die - which I'm sure many of you felt was coming soon depending on how much you had to drink over Spring Break - this is the branch of law that covers what happens to your things.

"Everyone should have a will," Nathan said, with the confidence of one who came from a family where wills were drawn up as soon as children were old enough to sign their names. "Without one the government gets to decide who gets your things. Not uncommon? The government decides that it's going to keep your things. So you need something that prevents that from happening, even if all you own is your favorite pillow case.

"In your packets is a sample will." Nathan gave them a grin. "Don't worry, it's not legally binding. What I'd like you to do is read through, get the gist of what they're looking for, and then write up a will of your own. If you don't feel like giving out personal information as part of a class assignment, feel free to make up your assets and beneficiaries."

Sam laughed. "Me too."

"So should just tell Nathan we don't need to do this assigment since we agreed not to die?"

"I don't think he'd take that as a valid excuse," Sam said. "We should at least try to make stuff up."

Dean made a phase. "It's stupid."

"You think all classwork is stupid," Sam said.

"No I don't," Dean protested. "Hell, I've been studying my ass off at learning Karsite the last couple of days and that's not even for class."

"You're learning Karsite?" Sam asked incredulously. "Like, the language?"

"No, the folk dancing," Dean said sarcastically, then made note to not think or mention that around Altra or he might just end up doing so.

"Wow," Sam said. "And you're just doing it to do it? You don't like, have to to meet some rule?"

"You don't need to sound like it's the most impossible thing you've ever heard of," Dean told him.

"You have to admit, it's not exactly the most every day occurrence," Sam replied.

"I'm not stupid," Dean protested.

"I didn't say you were stupid," Sam replied. "But you don't usually spend your free time studying languages. I'm just surprised, that's all."

"I learned Latin," Dean pointed out.

"Yeah, but we had to learn Latin," Sam said. "You're doing this because you want to. That's a good thing."

"You act like I've never learned anything because I wanted to before," Dean said, still a little put out. Yeah, he was learning Karsite, but it wasn't that big a deal.

"Not something like this. I just...I'm still trying to get used to you taking this whole thing so seriously."

Dean pulled out his Vkandis medal and held it up to Sammy. "Went through the whole ceremony thing, remember? I wouldn't have done that if I wasn't serious."

"I know," Sam said. "But there's ceremony serious, and there's learning a whole new language serious. I'm just really proud right now."

"It's not that big a deal," Dean said with a shrug. "And I got some divine help in having it all stick. Not that I couldn't learn it without that mind you."

"It's a big deal to me," Sam said simply.

"I never knew you've been hankering to have a multilingual brother, Sammy."

Sam laughed. "I've been hankering to have a brother with serious feelings towards religion. And now I finally have one."

Dean shrugged again, a little uncomfortable. "Yeah, well don't have me joining a priesthood or anything. I'm not that serious. Plus, I don't think I have the right temperment."

"Or the right love of celibacy," Sam replied.
