Choosing Your Own Government--Monday, Period 5, Class #8

Evey felt almost out of place as she stood at the front of the classroom, eyes wide and taking in every movement of every classmate.

"Hello," she said quietly, when she was certain everyone who would arrive had done so. "Vala's a bit indisposed at the moment," or, rather, MIA, "so I'll be covering class today. And since she didn't leave a lesson plan, we're going to watch a film." Because Evey was nowhere near ready to try to speak about her personal experience or relate another form of government.

"I haven't seen this one, but it sounds like it relates," she said, popping in the movie. "Sleep if you like. It's your time to waste."

She doesn't know where Vala is either.

And there was a largish horse, ears pointing straight forward, diffidently walking over to try and touch her with his nose.

Karal had no idea how to tell her it was him.

Evey had, oddly enough, noticed the horse in the classroom, yes. She'd gotten used enough to Fandom to think that maybe it was a new student.

"You're...not Trenor," she noted helpfully, carefully stroking his nose.

He shook his head, sighing a little as she stroked his nose. It was very distracting, but he was still trying to figure out how to tell her.

He tapped his hoof on the floor to get her attention.

Evey looked down at the floor where he was tapping. "Do you understand me, then? Two taps for yes."

Karal tapped twice, ears up and pointing straight at her, then started to drag his hoof over the floor in the shape of a shaky 'K'.

It was hard, what with barely being able to see, even with his head twisted around so he could peer down at the floor.

Evey tried to see what he was doing, her eyes seeking out the pattern.

As soon as she realized what he was doing, her head snapped up and she cast a look around the room. She had noticed he wasn't in class, of course, and now she felt idiotic asking, but..."Karal?"

He nodded frantically, making his mane and forelock fly, and let out a low whicker.

Evey stared. "I...what?"

Karal hung his head, ears dropping, and managed to roll his shoulder in something like a shrug.

She reached up to smooth his forelock. "You don't know how it happened?"

He shook his head and pressed his nose against her hand with another little horsie sigh.

"Or how permanent it is," she added, frowning a touch.

That was a more complex question. These things were always temporary. Karal tapped his hoof twice, then lifted his left leg and waggled it back and forth.

Maybe was difficult to express in charades.

Evey smiled as she understood. "You're very expressive, even as a horse."

He arched his neck and flagged his tail, looking pleased, and moved to nuzzle her hair.
