Adah wasn't the slightest bit happy about the return to her remembrance of dreams, and she blamed it entirely on Rachel's letter. That letter, her Trojan horse, docile and amusing on first glance, but, once you settled in and got comfortable with it, it bit you, like a serpent, bright blue mouth, the diabolic genius of nature attained from the highest degree of perfection. You didn't stand a chance. And then they appeared in multitudes in your dream, slithering forth from chicken coops surrounded by ashen dance floors of six-toed men. The chickens were all nothing but bare bones, flapping bare bone wings (find the furcula, break it apart, make a wish!), and then Tata Ndu shows up in his smell dead fur cloak. Rachel had gone and married, so it was time to take a new wife from Tata Price. Seeing as Leah was regarded practically a boy (and they were polygamists here, not homosexuals) and the little one was dead, that just left Adah. And Adah would do, applying to her same thing he'd said about the Mvula: "She will amuse my other wives."

Needless to say, waking up with that didn't leave Adah in the best of moods for her shift today.

"A massive scar," Adah confirmed this point with a bit too much amusement. "And a story to go along with it. I don't see how that's a negative. Scars are sexy."

"I don't already have enough scars to be sexy?" he asked, frowning some more.

"I never said that," Adah calmly, but pointedly, defended herself. "But I can't be dishonest and say that it wouldn't add significantly to your irresistibility. Granted, there's the whole added perspective that I'd be looking at my own work."

"I still think I'm going to have to say no to the surgery," Lee said, shaking his head sadly. "I just don't really need it right now."

"After getting my hopes up, thinking I stood a chance to convince you..."

Yup. That was definitely a pouty face. Reserved for only special occasions, and perhaps a chance to get something else out of the deal for compensation.

"Are you pouting at me?" he asked, sounding amused.

"...Yes," Adah managed to squeak out after a rather complicated battle in trying to keep the pout there. She had to clear her throat to steel herself against any attempts to grin.

Lee broke into a grin, shaking his head and laughing. "Why are you pouting at me?"

"Because you're no fun!" Adah gawked at him, because hadn't she made that entirely clear. "Like I said. No fun at all. You get medical notoriety, a chest scar to make scores of women swoon, and the gentle hand of the girl who will one day become one of the best doctors known to mankind with my offer; and what do I get in your choice to refuse? Nothing but disappointment."

"Hey hey hey, I am loads fun!" Lee protested, frowning. "You've had fun with me before!"

"Oh, you'd like to think that, wouldn't you?"

The pouting thing was getting a little bit easier, so long as he didn't call her out on it again.

"I don't think, I know," he said, nodding. "The pout's kinda cute anyway."

The pout instantly stopped, Adah's jaw setting tightly as if locking the stone expression that took its place there. She narrowed her eyes at the suggestion, and didn't say anything more, figuring the expression said it for her.

It was not.

"Yes, it was," he said, nodding. "Very cute. Adorable, even."

So much for the locked jaw. Adah gaped at him, about two seconds away from pleading him to just stop. "Don't even...!"

"Don't even what?" Lee asked. "Don't even say how adorably cute it was?" Oh wait, I just did."

"It isn't!" Adah insisted. "It's a silly and vapid little expression of distaste and selfishness that girls take on to try to seem adorable and cute to idiotic boys who would be stupid enough to be fooled by such affected little gestures."

"Did it ever occur to you," he said, still looking amused, "that I was saying it because I knew you'd react like this? Come on, I do know you pretty well."

If she hadn't spent so much damn time making sure that pen on her notebook was perfectly centered, Adah would possibly throw it at the Eel. She shot him a stern look. "If that's the case," she said, "than that doesn't make you idiotic, it makes you entirely evil."

Which was just another way of Adah telling him well done, you win, but, if he knew her as well as he was claiming, then he'd realize that, right?

"I'm not evil," he said calmly, shaking his head. "I'm just sometimes cunning."

"Too cunning," Adah amended the statement. "It isn't fair, pulling that on me when I'm having a bad weak. It makes me feel grumpy, and cranky."

Which, she had to admit, it kind of was. It still didn't settle right with her that he did know her so well, even less so in the light of what she'd been thinking, feeling, going through lately.

"I gotta get the advantage every once in awhile," he said. "Today just happened to be my day."

Adah was quiet for a moment, settling back against her chair as she looked up at him, carefully, thoughtfully, trying to not let all the weight of her recent issues seep back in. It wasn't as if she enjoyed being like that. Not with him there, anyway.

"I guess it's only fair," she said, eventually, with a light smile. After all, that suggested that perhaps she had an advantage for the majority of the time, and that was something she could live with. Knowing all too well what he did to her, of course, she didn't know if she could really believe it, but she could suspend her disbelief for a little bit.
