Today the class was meeting in the Danger Room.

It was Valentine's Day and Anakin couldn't leave for Connecticut until class was over. So it wasn't a coincidence that today's class could get most of the students fake killed in nasty ways.

"Welcome to your midterm," Anakin said, pacing across the flight deck of a ship. Behind him, thousands of pricks of lights showed that a space battle had been paused for him to talk. "Today, you will get to be Jedi."

His eyes went flat. "Or try, anyway. Your mission," he said, striding over to a three-dimensional schematic of the ship, "is to rescue the Chancellor of the Republic, who has been kidnapped by a General Grievous, the leader of a Separatist movement. There's also another fearsome warrior aboard, a Lord of the Sith named Count Dooku. He is not to be underestimated. He took my arm off when I was 20."

He shrugged it off.

"Regardless. You will be paired up and rescue the Chancellor. Alive, please. Your mission is to fight past the droids, and the Sith Lord, get back on a different ship and the hell off of this one as quickly as possible."

He waved his hand towards the control panel. The students would now find themselves in brown robes and holding unlit lightsaber hilts. They would work like the real things, but only in the Danger Room.

Their reflexes, regrettably, were what they had come in with.

"Try not to die," Anakin said, "and for the love of the Force, don't do stupid things with your lightsabers like try to skewer your classmates or write your name in the floor." He then listed off the pairings:

As she waited for Amber, Hoshi nervously took in her surroundings. This place looked rather creepy.

Karal kept reminding himself that Professor Skywalker wouldn't actually let them get killed.

Vkandis, this is not going to go at all well. At least the robes felt familiar. He held up the lightsaber and eyed it dubiously, then looked around the hangar. "Oh, glory," he muttered, and waited patiently for Teyla.

Robin looked at his robe with some distaste as he waited for Harry.

Teamwork. Anemone wrinkled her nose in distaste as she began warming up, waiting for Andrew. She really hated teamwork exercises.

Wyatt was in a great mood today. Even the drab robes couldn't get him down. He swung the lightsaber experimentally as he waited for Lana. It was a hell of a lot lighter than Excalibur, so he'd have to adjust for that.

Adam was definitely not used to wearing robes, but he was used to wearing a costume, so it wouldn't be terrible.

He studied the lightsaber, as he waited for Summer. It was similar to the swords he was used to handling, so he figured it wouldn't be that hard to use.

It wasn't exactly unusual for Adah to just stand and stare, tense and crookedly rigid, at a situation, but there seemed to be a particular annoyed quirk in her never-quite-straight neck. So this was what she had to roll out of a comfortable, warm bed with a warm, not as comfortable as the bed (but he tried) body in it with her for? She did, of course, take note of who she'd been partnered up with, and let out a breath. Interesting.

She blinked, keeping her eyes stead straight on the hangar bay in front of her, and then held out her arm, almost the straightest, stiffest part of her, holding out the lightsaber hilt. "I might as well just hand this over now and call it finished," she muttered.

Fight past the battle droids!

The simulation roars back into life as you find yourself in midleap above a starfighter that has clearly seen better days.

And here come the battle droids. They're pretty stupid, but they make up for it by bringing a lot of them along.

And they're all aiming their weapons at you. This could be bad.

Normally, when Reno found himself face-to-face with well-armed robots, they were on his side.

This did not, of course, mean that he wasn't up to the challenge. He was totally psyched to see what that glowing sword thing was capable of.

Which is why he barely waited for his partner before taking off at a run for them, glowing-sword-thingie first. Being fast was going to be a definite advantage, today.

"I've got a bad feeling about this," Mel meta-d said igniting her lightsaber. "Why the hell couldn't we get guns?"

Jo stared at the battle droids. "So much for simple," she muttered, igniting her lightsaber. "I knew I should have asked Luke for lessons or something."

Hoshi looked amused as she took a closer look at the droids. "I could probably kick these guys over," she said, tripping the first droid that came up to her. Then there was a second, and a third, and a fourth, and then she found herself surrounded.

Andrew angled the contraption into the heart of the droid pack and hit the release valve.

"Oh, look at it roll," he said, marveling that it was actually working.

He really hoped the doids didn't try to fire on it before it got far enough away. Otherwise, they might end up a little toasty.

"Huh," he said.

"Hi. My name is Mel Fray and I'm here with Rikku wan-kenobi and we're here to rescue you," Mel said looking at the prisoner. "Aren't you a little short to be a Chancellor?"
