Library [8.02]

Karal had managed to tame his hair since returning from his impromptu worlds tour with Jeff. It no longer looked as if it was set to launch a bid for world domination at any moment, and that could only be a good thing.

There was still no sign of Altra, though, which was a slight worry. As he sipped his morning tea and opened the library, he decided not to worry about it -- the Firecat would return in his own time.

Dean eyed him. "Well, you're not drooling on yourself or running in circles speaking in tongues..."

He started to laugh. "No, I just hid under Gavin's bed, so I'm probably going to be all right."

"Good. I've kinda got used to having you around. Without, y'know, drooling."

"I give you my word," he said solemnly. "No drooling. Oh! I have something for you." Karal hurried over to pulla small leather-bound notebook out of his satchel, and he offered it shyly to Dean. "It's not everything, because The Writ is long, but it should be enough for you to start with."

Dean took it and flipped through a few pages at random. "Thanks," he said, glancing up with a self conscious smile. "This looks good."

"You're more than welcome," he said, still feeling oddly shy. He'd never been involved in trying to bring someone to Vkandis before. "If you have any questions, well, you know where to find me, at least when I'm not falling into portals, anyway."

"Yeah, try to cut down on that, huh?" Dean joked. He paused. "I feel like I should be offering you something in return here..."

Karal shook his head. "It's not at all necessary, Dean. I'm happy to offer you anything I can."

"But that goes both ways, dude," Dean protested. "If there's anything I can offer...."

"There is one thing," he said hesitantly. "If you're sure you wouldn't mind."

"What?" Dean asked.

"When I was in Valdemar, one of the Heralds taught be self-defence. Getting out of the way, how to avoid dying long enough for the guard to arrive," he explained. "I am woefully out of practice, and I gave my word I would at least try and fix that. Do you think you could help?"

Dean grinned. "Yeah, I might be able to help out with that. Just unarmed or with weapons too?"

He shook his head. "Glory, no weapons! I'm not a fighter." Karal had no illusions about that. "I did try and learn the sword once, but it just didn't sit well with me."

"I'm not much for blades either," Dean said. "Sammy's better with them than I am. But there's other kind of weapons -- some of them even nonlethal if you know what you're doing if that's an issue...?"

"Partly, and I'm just not," he didn't know how to explain, "comfortable with a weapon. I could try and learn if you think I should, though."

"We can try you out on some, just so you're familiar with them. And who knows, maybe you'll find one that you are comfortable with." He paused. "We could try you with a staff maybe."

"I'm willing to try," he said firmly. "Thank you, Dean. Just," he smiled, "don't hurt me too badly, please."

"Nothing more than a few bruises, I promise," Dean said.

"Those I'm used to," he said, and laughed, surprised to find himself actually looking forward to this. "When should we start?"

Dean grinned. "What are you doing this weekend?"

"I suspect I will be getting slightly bruised." He didn't look at all unhappy about it. "Tomorrow, perhaps?"

"It's a date." Dean paused. "Though not an actual date date... My love life's kinda complicated enough already."

Karal laughed. "Oh, glory, no, not a date," he agreed. "At the gym?"

"Good place to start," Dean said. "We'll see what you know already and go from there."
