Library [8.02]

Karal had managed to tame his hair since returning from his impromptu worlds tour with Jeff. It no longer looked as if it was set to launch a bid for world domination at any moment, and that could only be a good thing.

There was still no sign of Altra, though, which was a slight worry. As he sipped his morning tea and opened the library, he decided not to worry about it -- the Firecat would return in his own time.

Karal was taking his time checking the books in this morning, enjoying the chance to see what his fellow students had chosen to read.

Books that had been checked in then had to be shelved.

Karal was in the stacks somewhere, doing exactly that.

General tidying was the order of the hour, and Karal was doing the rounds, organising the magazines and straightening the day's newspapers.

The library was, as always, closed to all but the usual suspects at lunch time.

Karal was eating his lunch, which is only what one would expect, given it was lunch time.

Satisfied that there were no pressing library chores to be done, Karal was working on some material for this afternoon's first meeting of the language club.

He might be a little nervous about it.

Never ever in the history of ever have I been so damn glad it's Friday.

There was an Andrew wondering about the stacks. He had come looking for Karal, but not finding him at the front desk, he decided to see if he could find any books on the Tocharian dialect. There was a small coterie of linguistics experts who believe it's the oldest recorded Indo-European language, and if even a scrap of the dialect it had originated from remained, there was potential for considerable power.

Evey was beginning to develop something of a routine, and if the absence of material on her shelves this week had brought anything to her mind, it was that she needed to be catching up and quickly. This, naturally, would be her sole purpose for stopping by the library. Really.

"I like small bunnies?" she greeted Karal, smiling slightly. "With sparkly, pink bows?"

He'd had to wake up a little earlier than even he usually did to have something ready to drop off (as he'd promised himself he would), but it hadn't been so bad since his sleep had been peaceful and uninterrupted.

As such, he walked in with yet another pair of bags and walked up to the counter.

Karal beamed at him. "Good morning, Liir. Are you well today?"

He was in quite a good mood, as it turned out.

Karal rounded the end of a shelf, spotted him, and smiled. "I was going to try and sneak up on you, but I'm terrible at it," he said, setting the last book into its place.

"You do?" he asked innocently, beaming at her. "I did not know that. "

Gavin slipped into the library, hid in an aisle and, from behind the wall of books, started lobbing pieces of balled up paper at Karal.

Just because.

"It's probably best you didn't," he replied. "I've got lightening fast reflexes and deadly skills. I would hate to have accidentally knocked you out or something."

"Ack!" It was surprise more than anything else.

They got caught in his hair, bounced off his forehead and his back, and then he pulled a book off the shelf and held it over his head. "They do terrible things to people who assault library assistants," he warned, trying not to laugh.

Yes, he had a suspicion who it might be.

"You'd have to prove who was doing it before that could happen," Gavin said, having disguised his voice by lowering it and making it sound rougher. "Can't prove anything!"

And there went more pieces of paper.

"I slept well enough," he said, misinterpreting on purpose. Sometimes a tendency towards naivety was helpful.

"And yourself?"

He put the bag down on the counter.

"I admit, the possibility of getting whapped in the head with a book was of concern," he said seriously, making an effort to hide his smile.

"That is one of the major things they teach you in self defense, use the objects around you. So that's a very good fear to have in this environment. You have an excellent sense of self preservation," he said.

"Kudos."

Karal noticed the selective answering, but decided not to push. He would remember it, though. "I'm very well this morning," he replied, looking curiously at the bag. "Did you bring me lunch again?" He'd not actually expected Liir to do so.

"I'm going to assume kudos are something good," he said, nodding his head. "And say thank you. How are you today, Andrew?"

"Stop that!" He was laughing too hard to give it much weight and he scooped up a few and tossed them back over the shelf, then attempted to sneak down the aisle, keeping a few in reserve.

He nodded.

"Chicken soup," he said. "Nothing all that complex, but it should be filling. And warm."

He tapped the side, where a little bowl sat.

"And a bowl of chicken just for Altra."

It was too bad for Gavin that he had his back to Karal, having not expected the sneaking and was still lobbing paper over the shelf, thinking he was still there.

"Never!"

"Aha!" Karal peered around the end of the shelf, and there was a sudden flurry of paper balls in Gavin's direction. "I know who you are, and rest assured, you'll pay for your transgressions!"
