Library [8.02]

Karal had managed to tame his hair since returning from his impromptu worlds tour with Jeff. It no longer looked as if it was set to launch a bid for world domination at any moment, and that could only be a good thing.

There was still no sign of Altra, though, which was a slight worry. As he sipped his morning tea and opened the library, he decided not to worry about it -- the Firecat would return in his own time.

"Ack!" It was surprise more than anything else.

They got caught in his hair, bounced off his forehead and his back, and then he pulled a book off the shelf and held it over his head. "They do terrible things to people who assault library assistants," he warned, trying not to laugh.

Yes, he had a suspicion who it might be.

"You'd have to prove who was doing it before that could happen," Gavin said, having disguised his voice by lowering it and making it sound rougher. "Can't prove anything!"

And there went more pieces of paper.

"Stop that!" He was laughing too hard to give it much weight and he scooped up a few and tossed them back over the shelf, then attempted to sneak down the aisle, keeping a few in reserve.

It was too bad for Gavin that he had his back to Karal, having not expected the sneaking and was still lobbing paper over the shelf, thinking he was still there.

"Never!"

"Aha!" Karal peered around the end of the shelf, and there was a sudden flurry of paper balls in Gavin's direction. "I know who you are, and rest assured, you'll pay for your transgressions!"

"Oh, kriff," Gavin said, twisting around to face Karal and trying to get off a few more shots while being pelted by paper. "Not fair! I was being sneaky!"

"Glory, does this mean you were out-snuck," he knew it wasn't a word, hush, "by a priest?" he asked, laughing, and was suddenly out of ammunition.

He ducked back, just in case another barrage would be forthcoming.

"No, I was distracted by all these books," he said because that made sense. And books were helpful so he grabbed one to use as a shield. "You just got lucky!"

Karal scooped up more of the balls that were littering the floor and tossed them at Gavin. "No, it's simply that my heart is pure," he said, actually with a straight face, though it wasn't easy.

"Oh man, don't make me laugh," he said, using the book to block several shots but missing several times. "You're not pure, not with that hair!"

"Blasphemy!" He was out of paper balls, and simply grinned at Gavin. "Terrible things happen to those who cast aspersions on the purity of a Sun-priest, too."

"Don't make me throw a book at you, Sun's Ray," Gavin teased.

Karal gasped and put a hand dramatically over his heart. "No book throwing! That might attract lightning bolts, and I prefer you not crispy!"

"Pfft, I'd dodge," Gavin said, waving a hand dramatically. "I'm quicker than lightning. In fact, you could say I was lightning quick."

The look currently being directed at Gavin was highly dubious. It even had a raised eyebrow.

"You have a bird in your hair," Gavin said, deadpan.

And even though he knew he didn't, he still patted his head before he could stop himself.

And that would be when Gavin had to lean against the shelves so he wouldn't fall over laughing.

Karal made a face at him. "Mean," he pronounced. "Very mean. And my hair is tidy today! I've tamed it!" Mostly.

"Mostly," Gavin said. "Not hiding anymore?"

"Not any more." He rubbed his temple with one finger, looking embarrassed. "I'm sorry about that. I've no idea what got into me, unless it was simply having been in Jeff's company for so long."

The lack of sleep might have contributed.

"I didn't mind," Gavin said and waved a hand. "Not like that spot was being used for anything more than storage. You can always come hide under there if you want."

"It seemed the safest place I could go," he admitted sheepishly.

"Aww." Gavin would never admit that hearing that really did make him feel good. "Why'd you come out of hiding today? Library shift?"

"I'll have you know I came out of hiding yesterday," he pointed out, pretending offence. "It was Professor Skywalker's class, so I didn't dare miss it."
