Library [8.02]

Karal had managed to tame his hair since returning from his impromptu worlds tour with Jeff. It no longer looked as if it was set to launch a bid for world domination at any moment, and that could only be a good thing.

There was still no sign of Altra, though, which was a slight worry. As he sipped his morning tea and opened the library, he decided not to worry about it -- the Firecat would return in his own time.

"There's a holiday next week? With...hearts?" Karal sounded very confused, and was picturing something very far removed from what Hallmark tended to publish. "Hearts?"

"I saw it on a calendar and looked it up," Gavin told him. "Like, it's about love and you get gifts like flowers and chocolate and there's a guy with an arrow who shoots people to make them fall in love. That's kind of scary."

"This is like Santa Claus, isn't it?" he said suspiciously. "Where it sounds like something terrible and turns out to be harmless."

"Like I know," Gavin said. "I'm just telling you what I read. He's a small guy who flies and shoots arrows at people."

"Glory, this place is odd. I don't want to be shot by an arrow," Karal pointed out. "It hurts, and I don't want to fall in love with someone because I got shot!"

"Aww, what if it was me?" Gavin teased.

"If it was you getting shot?" he teased. "That would be fine! If it was me falling head over heels in love with you?" A look of utter horror passed across his face. "No, no, no. That is not allowed to happen!"

"Karal, relax," Gavin said, eyes wide. "I was kidding. Breathe. Breathe."

Karal breathed. "I'm sorry," he said after a moment. "Something similar has already happened to me once. It did not end at all well."

Gavin frowned and said, sheepishly, "Sorry, I didn't know. I was just teasing, honestly."

"I know." He smiled. "And I overreacted." Karal prodded Gavin in the shoulder. "Besides, Inara would have us both strung up by our heels, which would remove any fun from it completely."

"True," Gavin said, nodding. "I don't know what I should get her for this holiday. A shield?"

"A shield?" he asked, confused again. "Why would you get her a shield? Is she taking up the sword?"

"No, to block the arrows for the little flying guy," Gavin explained. "So she doesn't fall in love with someone else."

"Oh!" Karal started to laugh. "She loves you. No little flying guy could change that, no matter how many arrows he uses."

"Well, still, no need for her to get shot," Gavin said. "Hmm. I'll have to think about it. I've got a few days, at least."

"When is it?" he asked. "I may have to find someone else's bed to hide under."

"The fourteenth," Gavin said after some thought. "So...next week."

"That's not much time to plan," he pointed out. "Do you want some help thinking of something?"

"What'd you think she'd like?" Gavin asked. "Flowers? Candy? Flowered candy?"

"A book," he said after a moment's thought. "Something old, maybe bound in leather. An author from this world, though. And some chocolate and flowers."

"Hey, good idea!" Gavin said, lighting up. "A book! I can do that! There are lots of books around here! Well, not here, I meant in Fandom."

"No giving her stolen books!" Karal spread his arms wide, pretending to protect the shelves behind him. "But Liir works at the book store, I'm sure he could help you find a good one for her."

"I think I'll stop in there on Monday," Gavin said, making a note to remember to do that. "Thanks, Karal. I'm gonna get out of your way, leave you to clean up the mess you made."

Yeah, Gavin knew he'd made it. "See you later?"

Karal looked at the balls of paper scattered around them, then up at Gavin. "Hmmph. You certainly will," he said, then grinned. "Go on, go find someone else to torment. If you need help with Inara's gift, just let me know."
