Driver's Ed [Wednesday, Period Four]

Today the Danger Shop was set up to resemble the streets of Fandom, and while the Bentley was gone again,it was replaced by a number of sporty, little cars in a range of bright cheerful colours parked at the causeway.

"Today we're going to be looking at safety," Bond said, after the class had assembled. "And when all's said and done, it's largely a matter of both using your own common sense, and recognising that you have no guarantees that other drivers are using theirs." He then launched into a short lecture going over the various things a person should or shouldn't do to help ensure their safety.

"Now that the lecture's out of the way, the rest of the class will a practical safety exercise," he continued, gesturing at the Goggomobils. "I want each of you to take one of these, and spend the rest of the lesson driving around this simulation of the town. At the same time. Do try not to crash."

"I think I've fought with Dean enough this week for a while," she decided, glancing anywhere but at Sam. "Maybe I'll let it wait until I'm bored, just so I can see the look on his face."

Sam frowned softly, and nodded, before putting his arm around Dawn. "You're right, no fighting with Dean."

She leaned in, wondering how they'd gone from arguing to this so quickly. "I'm a harpy, in case you're wondering."

Sam made a point of looking her up and down. "Are you sure? You don't look like a harpy."

"He was still recovering, and I went in and yelled at him." She sighed. "Not that I was wrong, but I could have waited. Maybe."

"Plus, he yells back."

"Yeah, Dean can get pretty loud," Sam said. "Especially when he's already screwed up. I'm sorry you guys fought."

"Me too," she sighed. "Plus, I don't think we solved the problem that made us fight in the first place, which means we'll end up doing it again."

"You could...try to not fight?" Sam suggested. "I don't know."

"You've tried not fighting with Dean. How does that work for you?"

"Not very well," Sam admitted. "Maybe I can help, be like a mediator. I'm fluent in both your languages."

She briefly considered tossing wadded up paper at him. "I don't think that would have worked, no."

Mostly because they'd been arguing about, or around, Sam.

"I mean in the future. If you're going to talk and fight again, maybe I can help," Sam said. "I don't want you guys to be mad at each other."

"I appreciate the thought, Sam, really," Dawn told him. "But maybe this is something Dean and I need to deal with ourselves, you know? I know you want us to get along, but Dean and I are friends, separate from you, too."

"Okay," Sam said quietly. "I know you are. I just thought maybe I could help somehow."

"Only if you can make him less stubborn, me less right, and both of us much quieter," she sighed. "I swear, it's almost as bad as fighting with you."

"I don't think anyone can make Dean less stubborn," Sam admitted. "I'm sorry."

"It's not like I'm the most easygoing person, either," Dawn said, in a blaze of understatement. "We'll deal."

"I hope so. I like it best when everyone I care about gets along."

She couldn't help it. She started giggling. "Wow, are you dating the wrong girl, except for the part where I love you like nuts."

"Hey, you and Dean get along fine most of the time," Sam said. "Don't you?"

"Most of the time, yeah," she nodded. "Just. When we don't? We really don't."
