Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 5

Today, Inventiontronics was in the Danger Shop. Said Danger Shop looked a lot like a rural 1950's American town. Nice, normal little town, except for that creepy floating dude, and the fact that all the people were robots in various states of disrepair.

The zipperheaded man responsible was standing under the welcome sign, notes in hand, waiting for everyone to gather around.

"Hello, class!" Gosh, he was cheery. "Today, you're going to be repairing the good folks of Milltown. They're all ready and able to tell you how to fix them. Think of it as a walk-through. Ask them whatever questions you need to, they don't bite no matter how angry they look in the icons and are waiting with tools over there."

Glitch pointed over to the main street where six robots, counting the weird floating one, were scattered on steps and porches. Each one had a toolbox sitting near them.

"You can work together, if you like, or work alone. It's up to you. They'll let me know how you did when everyone is finished. Now go on," he started to herd them towards the robot people, "start working!"

[ooc: Wait for the OCD of roboty doom is up!]

"Ah."

He didn't look at Anders.

"I don't like ticktocks for a lot of things," he said. "The Witch would talk about one that killed a professor of hers. It puts you off that kind of thing. But--"

He pointed towards the statue.

"I knew him. And he only wanted a heart."

"Why a heart?" asked Anders, honestly curious, as he turned his attention to the statue. "Like, literally?"

"He didn't have one," he said. "So he went on a quest for the Wizard with Dorothy and the Lion and the Scarecrow who all had things they wanted"

And killed my mother.

"and Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch of the West. And when I brought them back" which was a little bit of a lie but only a little; he had guided them, just not with an expert hand "they got what they wanted."

And they left me sitting at that bloody cafe like an imbecile.

". . . huh," Anders said after a moment. He had the vague sense that Liir wasn't saying everything, but he wasn't going to push. "How come he's got a statue in his honor?"

"I don't know. The last I saw him, he was going into the Wizard's palace," he told the other boy. "The only one I saw after that was the Scarecrow, because he came back to give me the broom."

Something caught up with him, something Anders had said.

"Cylons?"

"That's what they're called, the robots who tried to destroy my world," Anders explained. "They were supposed to help humans, especially way back when the Colonies were pretty new and things were rough. Then they started evolving, I guess . . . developed their own intelligence, not just what was programmed into them, and rebelled."

"I've heard the washing machines here did that," he said matter of factly.

He let that sink in for a moment before adding.

"If you'd like me to show you how to take care of your clothes without their help, I'll be happy to."

Anders chuckled, the sound a tiny bit forced. "Yeah, I remember that. That was kind of different, though. More embarrassing and less . . . apocalyptic."

He cringed, and added, "Okay, apocalyptic's a bit strong of a word, but sure, why not? Could be a useful skill sometime."

He nodded, making sure to check if he had all the supplies.

"All right. Whenever you've got time, just stop by 316."

He blushed a little.

"And, er, possibly 201."

"Cool," Anders said, then paused and blinked. "201, huh? That was my old room. Think it was right about a year ago that I moved out."

He blushed even worse, going from wine to the color of plums.

"It's Andrew's room. I'm, um, I seem to keep falling asleep there."

Anders gave him a small, understanding grin. "Yeah, I get that. Nothing to be embarrassed about, really."

"More awkward than embarrassed," he admitted with a small smile. "Andrew is nothing to be embarrassed about."

He was, in fact, so very proud of Andrew.

"He seems like a nice guy," Anders agreed. "Definitely nothing to be embarrassed about."

"He is. Incredibly nice."

Then he nodded to the lot of Milltown.

"We should probably get to work."

"Good idea." Anders nodded and flashed him a quick thumbs-up. "Let's go fix some robots."
