Library [02/03]

Since Lee had been kind enough to cover his shift on Monday, Sam was in the library today. He was hoping for a quiet day, so he could do some more researching.

Adah stopped about half-way through her limp toward the desk, which was about the time she realized that things were not as she'd grown to expect them to be at the moment. She blinked, eyes shifting first to one side, and then the other, as if expecting foul play or a practical joke, before they settled on the guy behind the desk today, who she realized that, if she knew him, she didn't exactly care enough to bother remembering him. She finished her limping trek until she was leaning a hip against the desk and tilting her head in a silent question. Was the Eel sick, or something?

If he was, she was going to be extremely pissed, for having to go through the battle in her head as to whether or not she was going to show up today after last week for nothing. She knew she should have just stuck with that icky feeling in the bottom of her stomach and not have bothered.

Wait a moment; Adah did know this kid. This was the guy who wouldn't leave the damn clinic that one weekend...She just didn't recognize him at first because she couldn't see his long legs with him sitting behind the desk. Her eyes narrowed, somewhat scrutenizing, before he even started his explanation. They switched shifts; simple enough, right? But why? She sucked in a breath as her brain started to wonder if perhaps he was avoiding her; it wasn't like he wouldn't have known she'd come here anyway, and, not wanting to deal with her so soon after...last week...just switch shifts with someone, easy enough, right? Or, even worse, what if...oh, Dog, what if River had said something to him since Wednesday? Considering that she used to rather take pride in beating him up, that could probably explain a lot, too--

With a sharp shake of her head, Adah made herself stop thinking about all that ridiculous stuff and lifted an affected nose into the air, with a sort of insistent detestation at Sam's suggestion. Because who ever said she was here to see Lee? Certainly not her; he hadn't said anything at all. What did she care if he switched shifts? She didn't; at all. Really. "I was just wondering," she said, firmly, "if the books neurology that were out when I was here on Wednesday," there were no books on neurology that were out on Wednesday, "were still out or not. I need something to read if it's a slow night at the clinic."

Very hopeful. But, hey, if Sam desired to make the suggestion that she put more attention into her bedside manner rather than focusing on giving her patients the attention they needed, she'd be willing to listen, of course. For now, though, she gave a short, slightly jerking nod. "Good," she said, and limped her way towards the shelves she knew she'd be needing, because she certainly didn't need any more of his help.
