Library; Wednesday [ 01/23 ]

Open the library. Y'rar, bileht nepo. Something weren't as good backward, but Y'rar, bileht desolc wasn't much better and it might be too early in the day for her to effectively get away with that, anyway. She had books, though, and she had a relatively comfortable chair at a nice, big desk. There were no bottles of prescriptions, though, that she could make lists out of horrible side effects from, and then write backwards, which just meant that she'd have to make up her own horrible side effects, list them neatly, and then slide them into the books before putting them in the pile of books to be put away. It was only her duty, as a doctor, to warn people that excessive readings of King of the Bracelets may cause frequent, contagious bouts of being hopelessly ostracized, and that these books on religions are likely to get you an unscratchable, burnable rash; if untreated, it could be crippling, much like a leper.

Adah will have to keep that in mind. Or, at the very least, keep reminding the Eel of it. She smirked again. "I already know five languages; I figured that wasn't enough, and it'll give me options to learn ones that my sister never will, so I can constantly hold it over her head."

"Sibling rivalry," he said, grinning. "I knew there was a reason I liked you so much. Well, one of the many, many reasons."

"Feel free to tell me some of the other ones, if you like," Adah grinned back, showing just how ready she was to hear him go on and on and on about her by leaning forward so that her chin could rest in the palm of her hand, propped up by her elbow on the desk.

"All right." Lee nodded and propped himself comfortably up against the desk. "I like that you don't take frak from anyone. That if I'm stupid, you tell me. And you don't do it to be mean, not to me, at least, but just so I know I'm being stupid and I'll stop."

So far, so good. Doo gos, ra fos. Smiling approvingly, her head bobbed on her hand. "I don't always tell you just so you stop, though," she informed him, "because the fact that you're stupid sometimes if part of why I like you. But, I'm interrupting, I'm sorry. Do go on."

He laughed and said, "I know. All right. Let's see. You're...beautiful and don't argue with me on this one. I'm very physically attracted to you."

Adah's nose wrinkled and her expression twisted into one of mild disgust, although it was vaguely ruined by the sustained smirk. "Asking me not to argue with you is asking quite a lot," she reminded him, "but I'll be good and won't. I will, however, turn your words back around on you and tell you that you, clearly, like the weirdest things."

"I like what I like," he said quietly. "And I like you."

Something about the softness in the Eel's voice made Adah's smile soften, too, as she lightly bit the bottom lip and carefully watched his expression. "Works out well, then, doesn't it?" she asked, her voice just as quiet.

"Yep," he said and grinned back. "Despite any insanity that either of us might have, it works out well. It's nice. Comfortable."

"Mild insanity loves company?" Adah offered sagely.

He laughed and said, "Is that the way the saying goes?"

"No," Adah admitted, as though she was hoping she could get away with it. There was a rueful duck of her head to the side, slightly. "But mine is better. I'd much rather be mildly insane than miserable. In fact, I hear that the former helps with the latter. I could actually be miserable and not even realize it."

"I don't want you to be miserable," he said quietly, seriously. "Not if I can make it better somehow."

"I think you're pretty lucky then," Adah told him. "I honestly can't remember the last time I was miserable when you were somewhere in the vicinity. And I have a good memory." That part of her brain, it seemed, had not only been spared, but given overtime to make up for the missing half.

"Good," he said, grin and posture softening. "Probably the best compliment you could ever give me."

"Mmm, a challenge," Adah mused lightly. "I'll have to strive for a better one next time."

"Telling me that I make you happy will be hard to beat," he said quietly. "It's a big compliment and it's important to me."

"It's just the truth, though," Adah said, not wanting to downplay the significance he was putting into it, but her cynicism wouldn't allow it to go unchecked. Just like her stubborn, arrogant, egomaniac self wouldn't allow her to pass up the challenge of thinking of something even better, to prove him wrong, although she had a feeling that he wouldn't mind so much, if she could find something better. Another thing to like about the Eel; he seemed to actually benefit from her proving him wrong.

"It's not a compliment I've ever heard before," he explained. "Not seriously, at least."

"How do you know I'm saying it seriously?" Adah challenged, but without any conviction in the soft drawl of her voice. She was saying it merely to satiate the ever-present skeptic, which was just hoping he'd conveniently forget that she'd just seconds before claimed it to be truth. People could lie, though, it argued. In fact, it was in their nature to do so, right?

"I don't think you'd lie to me," he said simply.

Adah looked at the Eel quietly for a long moment before, with a light, wry grin on her lips (it didn't seem to reach her eyes, as if something still lurking there behind them wouldn't let it in), she commented, "For someone so stupid, you sure can be smart sometimes."

He laughed and ran a hand through his hair. "Thanks. I have my moments of intelligence. They just come in between a lot of stupid."

The smile started leaking into other facets this time as Adah watched the Eel's hand move through his hair. She nodded, slightly, to the top of his head, the action that she'd never really taken notice of before. "You don't miss," she asked, "your terrible weekend hair, by chance, do you?"
