Interactive Religion [Tuesday, January 22]

"Hello again," Biff said with a small smile. "I guess your weekend was...eventful. Today we're going to address one of the reasons that people cling to religion: the hope that something lives on after the body has died."

He waved his hands towards three Muppets guests. "You might recognize our Chef. He's joined by two friends, and they are professional mourners."

He frowned. "At least, I'm pretty sure that's what he said. Anyway. They're going to sing a traditional dirge called 'Danny Boy,' and then you will pair up and try writing your own."

He grinned. "I spent some time as a professional mourner, so I know a good dirge when I hear one. But first...the Leprechaun Brothers!"

Reno stared.

And Reno stared some more.

He was doing a good deal of staring.

He just couldn't shake the notion that these three and his buddy Rude from back home would make an awesome barbershop quartet.

Reno had to write a funeral dirge. He wasn't certain if this was a sick sort of joke or not, really. But heck, if he had to be creative or something, at least he could have fun with it, right?

Even if his only lyric idea at present was something along the lines of 'boo freakin' hoo.'

Karal put his head on his desk and sighed.

At this point, nothing surprised him. He was just grateful there were no statues involved this week.

Karal was, indeed, past the point of beating his head on things. This week, he was embracing a sort of stunned silence. Kind of a rabbit in the headlights approach to things.

He had his head propped on his hand as he stared at nothing. Feel free to poke him to get his attention.

There were tears. They were not tears of sadness. Oh no. And the sounds coming from Jamie were not sadness at all.

The song made Romeo choke back a truly manly sniffle.

Romeo was paging through his poetry notebook. He had to have written something after Juliet died that was appropriate for a broader audience.

Andrew thought this was a perfectly wonderful rendition of the song, and when it was over, he gave it a solemn slow clap.

Andrew peeked over Romeo's shoulder, wondering if the other boy had come up with anything yet.

Unfortunately Romeo had gone through all the actual good poems and was on his acrostic, the one that began "J = Joyous, U = Unspeakably beautiful" and continued through to "T = Trapped." Sensing someone over his shoulder, he glanced up to see Andrew. Reflexively, his hand covered his work, but probably not until Andrew had gotten a pretty good look.

"Shall we work together, then," he asked, as a distraction.

Andrew had indeed spotted the poetry, but remembering his previous conversations with Romeo, decided not to ask any questions. Still, he did reach up to give the other boy a small pat on the shoulder.

"Sure!" He had been hoping for an offer.
