How to Survive Your Own Cooking [Class 2]

"Today," Lulu began, after the class had come into the home ec room, "as it says on your syllabus, we're going to be studying breakfast foods. As it's still fairly early in the class, we'll focus on more basic foods -- if you'd like more advanced recipes, or even some extra instruction, feel free to see me after class and we can discuss it.

"One of the most basic breakfast foods is cold cereal -- generally, in this world at least, you buy it boxed, and simply add milk, potentially some form of sweetener, occasionally sliced fruit such as berries or bananas, or even eat it as is, straight from the box. Unfortunately for you all, you're not getting away with that today. If you'd like, you can attempt to make your own, but that's not required for today's class.

"One of the staples of breakfast -- although, indeed, it is a great food for any time, including snacks -- is the scrambled egg." Lulu demonstrated proper whisking behaviour, then took her students through the process of cooking the eggs so that they'd be able to recognise when their own were finished.

"Breakfast wouldn't be complete without bacon and toast," Lulu continued. "I will add that I added the toast 'recipe' today," and you could hear the airquotes, "because it amused me greatly -- but do try to follow it as best you can. It is helpful, for all that it seems to be frivolous.

"Your assignment today is to make a complete breakfast -- cereal, eggs, bacon, and toast. If you prefer not to make the homemade cereal, you may used boxed cereal, but everything else requires preparation.

"All of the recipes you need are at your stations. Pair up -- in different pairs than last week -- and cook away! Everything you need is available either in your stations, except for ingredients if you wish to make the cereal, or if you wish to make a variation on the scrambled eggs; for those, you can find the moddable ingredients here at the front of the class."

Lulu smiled. "As a drink, I recommend apple or orange juice, as they will help round out the meal. Coffee and hot chocolate, however, are also provided. You can find the drinks at the front of the room as well." She paused. "Feel free to drink them during the class as well."

[OCD will be up in a few is up! I'm hungry now.]

Demyx gave Liir a sideways look (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1655346.html?thread=101007922#t101007922). "...Well, I guess this might be okay. It's not cooking."

"It is," he disagreed, "but only a little. I can show you how to watch to keep from burning things. It's not too hard."

He looked down at the recipe and started assembling things.

"What would you like to add to the cereal mix? Anything catch your eye?"

"...Wait, you're planning to actually make it?" Demyx looked horrified. "It's in a box! Just use the box!"

Liir gave him a very exacting look.

"The class is called 'Survive Your Own Cooking', is it not? How are we ever going to learn if we don't cook?"

Scratching the back of his neck a little, Chad glanced over the options of boxed cereal available. "Or," he suggested to Shawn, "we could go crazy an' actually try to make it ourselves..."

He kind of really wanted to try, but he was also thinking it was smoething he should try on his own time, but an idle effort to influence his partner otherwise couldn't hurt, right?

"Okay, just pouring cereal is a little basic, even for me," Shawn said, looking at the boxes. "I'm sure we can do better than that."

"Well, just a start," Chad said. "We have to make a full breakfast, right? This is like stretching before practise. Important. And then maybe we'll move onto..."

Chad considered the other stuff, trying to determine wha tmight be easier. "Bacon's pretty damn easy..."

Tamaki gazed pensively at the many different choices. He hadn't tried any of these, let alone heard of them. In fact, if his Father knew he was going to be eating sugar-fortified commoner cereal, he would probably have a fit! ...Actually, that made the sugar-fortified commoner cereal pretty darn appealing.

Turning to his partner, he asked, "What kind do you like?"

Never one to pass up free food, Demyx followed Liir (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1655346.html?thread=101014578#t101014578) over to the egg station. "This really is a lot of work," he observed.

"Not really," he said. "It looks like a lot of work because I'm showing it to you. And besides, with the cereal, you make a bunch and you can use it for a while."

"But it's not really the 'roll out of bed, grab, and go' kind of food." Demyx was very fond of those sorts. "Are you a morning person?"

Jenny started by cracking the eggs into a bowl. Then she peered into the bowl, said, "Bugger," and got a fork to fish a bit of shell out.

Sam glanced over, saw what she was doing, and smirked. "I do that all the time," he said. "Stupid eggs."

After their near disaster (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1655346.html?thread=101029682#t101029682) with making toast, for some reason it struck them as a good idea to try making bacon. This was probably a really bad idea.

"So," Makoto said, looking at the stove, "how high do you think this should be turned up to start with?"

"Hotter means faster, right?" Cassandra asked as she looked around the cooking station.

"That doesn't seem to work so well for toast," Makoto pointed out, "maybe it'd work better with bacon though?"

Re: Assignment: I Can't Think of Anything Witty for Toast

"What kind of toast do you think?" Makoto asked Cassandra while looking at the different types of bread. "Does it really matter?"

Cassandra grabbed some slices of bread at random, "I hope it doesn't."

"So do I." Makoto said, "How long do you think? A minute? Maybe two? Or just keep an eye on it so it doesn't go black."
