Sam had a careful balancing act going on as he tried to hold on to the stack of books he was carrying and unlock the library at the same time.

After her class, Hoshi stopped by to do some additional research.

Sam looked up and grinned at Hoshi. "Hey! How are you?"

"Not bad," said Hoshi. "Hey, I'm taking your dad's class this semester."

"You are? Awesome," Sam said. "Dad's getting really good at teaching."

"You should have heard me talking about vampires to all those new students. I sound like a Fandom veteran, and it's only been one semester," said Hoshi. "The class sounds really cool, though. I think I'm going to enjoy it."

"Hey, surviving one semester makes you more of a veteran than the new people," Sam pointed out.

"That's probably true. It was a pretty wild semester," said Hoshi. "I think I've learned how to keep a cool head in pretty weird situations. Papa and I accidentally got caught in a riot when we were visiting San Francisco."

"Oh my God," Sam said, eyes wide. "Were you guys okay?"

"We were okay. Papa told me to run and get help and I found some very helpful Starfleet officers," Hoshi reassured him. "I'm just worried about what's going on back home. Apparently there's this group that hates aliens and it looks like my uncle joined them."

"That doesn't sound good," Sam said. "I take it they're not really paying attention to the difference between good aliens and potentially bad ones?"

"Probably. I think a lot of people are just scared because the planet is about to start deep-space exploration in a couple of years," said Hoshi. "Plus there's some lingering resentment that the aliens we do know of haven't really shared a lot of information. They say that we need to learn for ourselves. What worries me is that my mother kept asking all sorts of questions about whether or not there were non-humans at this school."

"Uh oh," Sam said sympathetically, trying not to let himself get caught up in how awesome deep-space exploration sounded. "What did you end up telling her?"

"In a sense, I told her the truth. There aren't any Vulcans here at Fandom, after all," said Hoshi. "She isn't aware of any other aliens."

Sam laughed. "Well, I guess that works out perfectly then. Good job."
