Library; Wednesday [ 01/09 ]

There was an almost ceremonial feeling in the air as Adah limped into the library; it hadn't been a while since she'd been there, no, of course not, but it had felt like it had been a while since she'd opened it. Not that she ever did an exceptional amount of work while she was there, but she limped in, found the desk, carefully pulling out her chair. She had a seat, centered it carefully, and then settled her bag on one corner. She then meticulously angled the books so that they were balanced with everything else on the desk. She brushed a hand over the surface, leaned in close, and blew a stream of air over imaginary dust. And then she was prepared to start the day, after a theatrical, though extremely quiet, mouse-like cough at the imaginary disturbance of her lungs.

Coming out of his office, a few books still left over from his predecessor in hand-- he paused.

No. This was not shaping up to be his day.

"Principal Washburne."

He had hoped it was a different Washburne.

Zoe was going to kill the school board. She was going to kill them, and set the building on fire, and no jury in the world would convict her.

"What are you doing here?"

"It would appear, performing the service of librarian." Yes, that might actually sound a little sarcastic. If one could tell the difference when his tone remained calm and even as it always was..

His previous visitor had not left him in a particularly friendly mood. It was to be expected.

Zoe moved to close the space between them, thinking of all the things she wanted to say, all the things she'd thought about saying to him if they ever met.

And then, when she got close, the words all seemed to fade, and all she could think to do was punch him with everything she had in her.

Of course.

He didn't dodge or try to stop her. This-- he most certain he deserved.

Gently touching the side of his face, he slowly got to his feet. Rather hopeful that it wouldn't result in being hit once more. "I am not here to harm anyone."

She thought about hitting him again, but only for a moment. Once had been enough to get rid of a whole lot of her anger.

"You expect me to believe that? Honestly?" she asked. "Because you're sure as hell not a librarian."

"Perhaps not, but it is my job now," He replied, picking up the dropped books and placing them on the counter. "And I assure you, I am not here to for any purpose other than that."

"Being a school librarian seems like an awfully big downgrade," Zoe said. "Why are you here? Why this school? My school?"

A downgrade from nothing, indeed.

"I was not aware of you presence here. Nor that of Miss Tam," He said, arranging the books carefully before meeting her eyes. "I can assure you, it would not have been my choice to come here had I known."

"You saw River?" Zoe asked, unable to keep from focusing on that for the moment.

"She was here last period," He said, hands clasped lightly behind his back. "And threatened to kill me as well, so I do not think you need fear for her safety."

He paused, correcting that. "Not from me or any actions on my part."

Zoe had little doubt that River could take care of herself, but that didn't mean she didn't prefer for her to be in a situation where she didn't have to.

"What are you doing here, then?" she asked.

"I told you," He said calmly, kindly even. "I am here as a librarian. Nothing sinister in my motives. Simply a job."

Zoe wished like hell she could tell whether or not he was lying, but the calmness wasn't giving anything away.

"I hope for your sake that this is just a job," she said. "I have a family here, and people that I care about very much. If I get even a hint that you might be a threat to them, I won't hesitate to take care of the problem."

"I do not doubt that." He continued to look back at her, nothing given away mostly because there was nothing to give away.

Feeling as satisfied with that answer as she was going to get, Zoe nodded. "If you need anything concerning the library, I'll be in my office." She sincerely doubted that he would come by, but she felt the offer still had to be made.

He smiled, almost to faint to notice and nodded. "I will remember that, Principal Washburne."

And no, he did not think it was an offer he was going to take her up on either.

She nodded slightly, and gave Adah a faint smile, before turning and heading out of the library. There was some very strong alcohol waiting for her in her office.
