"Nice save," she conceded, still a little grumbly.

"Hey, it's the truth," he promised, moving closer. "She's got nothing on you."

"Okay, I asked about new shoes! I thought maybe you were trying something different," he told her, wondering how he was going to get her past this.

She sighed, fully aware that she was being stupid. "It's just weird," she said. And if Brooke took him up on it, new girl was gonna get hurt.

"Come here," he said, doing the only thing he could think of that might help - holding out his arms. "I'd like to hug my girlfriend now."

She stepped closer, sliding her arms around him. "Next semester will be better," she said, half into his chest.

He wrapped his arms around her, resting his cheek on the top of her head. "It will be. No more surprises."

Her earlier irritation didn't matter that much all of a sudden. "I'm holding you to that," she said, a little more lightly.

"You can hold me any way you like," he flirted, finding himself rather amusing.

"I noticed," she told him, managing a little smile.

"It's something good to focus on," he offered.

"I can't argue that," she said, tightening her arms around him a little. "I knew I liked you for a reason."

"Yep, I'm very likable," he told her, hand rubbing her back slightly.

"You are," she said honestly. And then thinking the honesty was too serious, she added, "You'd have to be. After all, you got me, didn't you?"

"Hmm," John considered what she'd said. "And here I thought that was all about perseverance and some really good kissing."

"That was certainly a factor," she admitted, smiling.

John decided he'd try this again with the real girlfriend this time. "So, got any plans tonight?"

It didn't even occur to Jaina that they'd been standing like this for a while now. She wouldn't have really thought it mattered anyway. "I think I do now," she answered. "What are you offering?"

"I'm offering pizza and really bad action movies," he said, deciding he wasn't letting go until she agreed. "Possibly popcorn, but I might need to check my supplies."

Like they'd get to the popcorn. "I'm thinking that sounds like a pretty good plan," she said. Best way to avoid thinking about things, such as how out there today really was, was to stay distracted and he was excellent at helping her out with that.

There was always the possibility that they would get to the popcorn. "Good," he said, pulling back a little to look at her. "Wanna help pick out the pizza?"

"Pre-activity activity," she said. "I'm in." And it should keep him from hitting on looklikes in the interim.

"Great," he smiled down at her, happy she'd agreed. "We could go now, or stay like this a little longer." Because hey, he really didn't have a problem with it.
