Having sampled enough food that she wasn't hungry, and feeling slightly giddy from jetlag, time changes, and the newness of everything, Coraline was content to simply watch all the people.

Some of them were extremely interesting looking.

Demyx waved at her, hastily swallowing a mouthful of potato chips. "Hi! Are you new?"

[identity profile] advicefrommice.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Coraline waved back. "I am," she replied. "New to the island, at least. My name's Coraline."

"I'm Demyx. Nice to meet you!" He smiled brightly. "I've been here for...uh...about a year and a half now, I think."

She offered her hand to shake, feeling incredibly grown up while she did so. "That's quite a long time," she said. "Is there anything I should watch out for?"

Demyx shook her hand with a minimum of awkwardness. "Watch out for the gremlins," he advised sagely. "And the glitter that causes boykissy. Not that you have to worry about that, really, but it's still something to watch out for." He paused. "Oh, and the random invasions, too. Like the mermaids, and the dinosaurs..."

Corlaine considered that. If it were true, it explained the message from the mice. "Gremlins, mermaids and dinosaurs," she repeated. "Really dinosaurs?"

The other two she could accept, she thought, or she would eventually. But dinosaurs?

"Yeah, dinosaurs." Demyx nodded emphatically. "It was crazy."

Robin waved to the new girl from where he was perched on a chair with his banjo. "Hi! Welcome to Fandom!"

Coraline didn't stare, but she did give him a long, slow, thoughtful look. He seemed to be a frog. A frog with a banjo. "You seem to be a frog," she said to him.

He giggled. "Yes, that's what I am."

"Hi!" Ino greeted the girl brightly, "Are you new?"

"I'm beginning to realise how very new with each person I meet," she replied with a smile. "I'm enjoying it."

She grinned and held out her hand to shake. "I'm Yamanaka Ino - my first name is Ino, though. What about you?"

"Coraline. Coraline Jones," she replied, shaking Ino's hand carefully. "It's nice to meet you."

"It's excellent to meet you, Coraline." Ino said, pronouncing the name carefully, "New people are always exciting!"

Re: More General Mingling

[identity profile] advicefrommice.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
"They are," she agreed, pleased that Ino had gotten her name right. "More exciting here than in other places. I've met a warrior and a musician who can make an instrument appear from nowhere, and found out that there are gremlins and mermaids and sometimes dinosaurs."
intraspective: (joy!)

"There is also random amnesia, and weetiny knights!" Ino told her brightly, "And people who are dead in one timeline alive in another."

Being an experienced people-watcher herself, Naminé suspected she saw the signs, and smiled faintly. "Are you an artist?" she asked.

Re: More General Mingling

[identity profile] advicefrommice.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Coraline considered the question. "No, I'm not an artist," she said, deciding that her scribbles didn't count. "I am Coraline, though, from England. Why did you ask if I'm an artist?"

Re: More General Mingling

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Naminé, from ... I haven't really a home. Twilight Town, I suppose." She flushed. "You must excuse me. I thought you were doing what I do; hanging back a bit and observing rather than participating. I've always assumed that's because I'm marking things down so I can draw them out later."

Re: More General Mingling

[identity profile] advicefrommice.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"You wanted to know and so you asked," Coraline said, surprised at the apology. "There was no other way for you to know. I admit, I'm watching only out of curiosity. This school is extremely interesting. Is it fun being an artist?"

Re: More General Mingling

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
"It is," Naminé said, with a light smile. "So long as you don't mind not being any good at it. And I don't. It's more about creating than the end result, I think. And this school is far stranger than one might imagine. I tried to warn my little sibling earlier and she thought I was hazing her."

Re: More General Mingling

[identity profile] advicefrommice.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Having fun is more important," she agreed. It was what she'd always thought. "She didn't believe you?" Coraline thought about that. "I suppose if she'd never seen anything unusual, it might be difficult to believe. What's her name?"

Re: More General Mingling

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Her name's Dōjima," Naminé said, looking around to see if she could spot her new little sister in the crowd. "She seems very nice, but I suppose she's not accustomed to oddities. It's all right, it's practically a tradition here to tell the new students what to expect and not be believed most of the time. Has anyone explained the strangenesses yet?"
