She grinned and held out her hand to shake. "I'm Yamanaka Ino - my first name is Ino, though. What about you?"

"Coraline. Coraline Jones," she replied, shaking Ino's hand carefully. "It's nice to meet you."

"It's excellent to meet you, Coraline." Ino said, pronouncing the name carefully, "New people are always exciting!"

"They are," she agreed, pleased that Ino had gotten her name right. "More exciting here than in other places. I've met a warrior and a musician who can make an instrument appear from nowhere, and found out that there are gremlins and mermaids and sometimes dinosaurs."

"There is also random amnesia, and weetiny knights!" Ino told her brightly, "And people who are dead in one timeline alive in another."

"Oh," she said, wondering if the weetiny knights caused the amnesia. "Dead people can be alive here?"

Coraline wasn't sure she liked the sound of that.

"Well, there's zombies at Caritas," Ino said, "but actually, I meant, people come from different timelines you see? But from the same universe. So, while someone died in my version of the universe, in their version they didn't. It can get complicated."

"Zombies? Really zombies?" she asked. "Stumbling around like in the movies all wanting brains zombies?"

The rest of what Ino had said had paled a bit in the face of possible brain eating, and Coraline was trying very hard to remember what worked against zombies.

"They're not dangerous zombies!" Ino said, "They play music for the bar. That's all."

"But do they eat brains?" Musical brain eating didn't sound that much better to Coraline.

She'd seen a movie with zombies, once. It had made an impression.

"I don't think so?" Ino said, "But I've only been there once - though I'm sure the radio would've said something if people were losing their brains."

"Would it though?" she wondered. Coraline would definitely be going to Caritas to see the zombies as soon as possible. "Is Caritas very far away?"

"The squirrels seem to know pretty much everything. So the radio is pretty informative." Ino assured her. Not, mind, that Ino actually bothered to listen to the radio very often. "And it's just down in the town - hard to miss too, because there's only two bars."

"Squirrels?" Maybe they were related to the mice. "The squirrels do the radio? Do they talk?"

"They gather the information from what I understand, and they certainly seem to communicate well enough to get their wishes across to the radio hosts."

Coraline giggled at the sudden picture she got of squirrels running hither and yon, gathering up the news and whispering it to radio announcers. "I'll have to tell Mr Bobo about the squirrels," she decided. "He's training a mouse circus. I'm sure he'd like to hear about them."

"A mouse circus? What's that?" Ino asked curiously.

"White mice who play tiny musical instruments," she explained. "I'm not sure if it exists or not. Some days I think it does, and some days I don't. Mr Bobo, he lives in the flat above ours, says he's training them."

She thought she might just keep the fact that they sent messages to her a secret for now.

Ino thought that was just about the cutest idea ever. "But you've never seen them?" Because how else could you not be sure if something existed or not?

"Mr Bobo keeps saying that they aren't ready to perform, that they play the wrong sounds, oompah oompah instead of timmpinny tee." Something like that, anyway. Coraline couldn't remember exactly, "But he's quite convinced they're real."

She was less inclined to dismiss this out of hand then she would've been a few months ago. "Is he otherwise perfectly sane?" Ino asked, "Because I suppose it's possible."

"How do you tell if someone is perfectly sane?" Coraline asked with genuine interest.

It was a question she'd very much like to know the answer to.

"I guess it depends on your perspective, doesn't it?" Ino realized belatedly. "But I guess 'not a menace to the general populace' is probably a fairly safe place to start."

"He's not a menace to anything. Except maybe to cheese," she added. "But I'm not sure that makes him sane. I expect there probably are mice."

"I don't think anyone's really decided what sanity is." Ino grinned. "I hope there are mice, because that's just adorable."
