"Do you do magic?" she asked, interested. "We don't have that at all at home and it's fascinating."

"I don't, no. I'm a priest, not a priest mage," he explained. "But there's many at this school who do. I would be happy to introduce you to some, if you don't meet any on your own."

"Wait, you're a priest?" Evey eyed him warily. She didn't have the best track record with the clergy. "You're awfully young."

It seemed to be his day for people who didn't like priests. "I'm a Sun-priest of Vkandis Sunlord," he said quietly. "He is not known on this world, beyond the people I have told about Him. I know I am young, but I am a full priest."

That sounded much better. "I apologize -- the Church in my world isn't the most...pleasant," she said somewhat vaguely, but it would take too long to explain what Norsefire had done. "And all the priests I've ever met have been very old," she added with a little smile.

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
"The church in my country once wasn't very nice, either," he said, smiling a little in relief. "There's no need to apologise. And I will eventually be old, just not yet."

"Which really is true of all of us, isn't it?" she said thoughtfully. "Unless you're already old, in which case it was true at some point. But how interesting. I've never met anyone of another faith." That she was aware of, and faith was the wrong word on so many levels.

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
"That is very true," he said with a quiet laugh. "We are all old and we are all young, and every age in between. It's just a matter of when we meet each other." He tilted his head a little, expression thoughtful. "Vkandis is a true god, and He holds His hands over Karse, but I have learned that He is not the only true god. There are many faiths in my world, but each one is only as true as the person who holds it."

She smiled gently. "And what about the absence of faith in a higher being?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Do you mean someone who has lost their faith?" he asked. "Or someone who has never had any?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] remember5th.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Does it matter?" she replied, though she mentally decided that she fell into the former group.

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course!" He held out his hands, looking surprised. "Someone who has lost their faith is someone who's been hurt, damaged. Something has robbed them of their ability to believe. It can cause bitterness and resentment, and often hatred of that which they think betrayed them. Someone who has never had faith has lost nothing. They simply choose, for whatever reason, not to believe."

Karal frowned, thinking. "It's like a man who is born with only one arm compared with a man who has lost his in war. They may appear the same, but in here," he touched his heart, "they are very different.""

Evey bit her lip, considering his words. "That's true," she said thoughtfully. "There's a drastic difference between those whose faith shatters, and those who never had any to begin with. I never thought of it that way."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
"It's a terrible thing to lose your faith," he said sadly, hands closing around his Vkandis medal. "I cannot imagine the pain that it would cause."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] remember5th.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I hope you never have to," she said sincerely, and smiled sadly before recovering. "Not a very picnicky topic of conversation, I'm afraid. Sorry about that."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Karal was actually a bit disappointed. There weren't many people he could talk with about these things. "No, no I guess it's not," he said reluctantly, then glanced up at her, eyes hopeful. "If you did want to continue, we could do so another time? We could go into the town for tea, maybe?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] remember5th.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Absolutely," she said, too surprised to think very hard about it. "I tend to get a bit carried away with my theories, but if you'd want to talk, then by all means, yes."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now he was beaming at her. "I would, yes. Maybe next weekend, after the first week of classes?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] remember5th.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Certainly," she said with a soft smile of her own. "That sounds very nice. Especially after classes, considering I've got no idea what to expect from them. Something to look forward to."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
"They're...different than ordinary classes," he said thoughtfully. "But you can learn a great deal more than you first expect."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] remember5th.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
"It's been a few years since I was in a proper classroom," she admitted. "So that's good to hear. And they do sound interesting."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Which classes are you taking?" he asked, then hurriedly added, "Just in case we have some together."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] remember5th.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Choose Your Own Government, Ethics, and Criminal Justice," she said, reciting from memory. "I didn't choose them, but I'm pleased."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Then we have two together! The only one I'm not taking is Criminal Justice." He bit his lip, considering it. "Professor Skywalker, he teaches Ethics, can seem...standoffish at times, but he does have a good heart."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] remember5th.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
"I've met my share of men like that," she said, smiling softly as her thoughts turned to the man she concentrated on not thinking of every hour, every day. "But that is good, that there are two together. At least I know I'll know someone in those two classes."
