"Of course!" He held out his hands, looking surprised. "Someone who has lost their faith is someone who's been hurt, damaged. Something has robbed them of their ability to believe. It can cause bitterness and resentment, and often hatred of that which they think betrayed them. Someone who has never had faith has lost nothing. They simply choose, for whatever reason, not to believe."

Karal frowned, thinking. "It's like a man who is born with only one arm compared with a man who has lost his in war. They may appear the same, but in here," he touched his heart, "they are very different.""

Evey bit her lip, considering his words. "That's true," she said thoughtfully. "There's a drastic difference between those whose faith shatters, and those who never had any to begin with. I never thought of it that way."

"It's a terrible thing to lose your faith," he said sadly, hands closing around his Vkandis medal. "I cannot imagine the pain that it would cause."

"I hope you never have to," she said sincerely, and smiled sadly before recovering. "Not a very picnicky topic of conversation, I'm afraid. Sorry about that."

Karal was actually a bit disappointed. There weren't many people he could talk with about these things. "No, no I guess it's not," he said reluctantly, then glanced up at her, eyes hopeful. "If you did want to continue, we could do so another time? We could go into the town for tea, maybe?"

"Absolutely," she said, too surprised to think very hard about it. "I tend to get a bit carried away with my theories, but if you'd want to talk, then by all means, yes."

Now he was beaming at her. "I would, yes. Maybe next weekend, after the first week of classes?"

"Certainly," she said with a soft smile of her own. "That sounds very nice. Especially after classes, considering I've got no idea what to expect from them. Something to look forward to."

"They're...different than ordinary classes," he said thoughtfully. "But you can learn a great deal more than you first expect."

"It's been a few years since I was in a proper classroom," she admitted. "So that's good to hear. And they do sound interesting."

"Which classes are you taking?" he asked, then hurriedly added, "Just in case we have some together."

"Choose Your Own Government, Ethics, and Criminal Justice," she said, reciting from memory. "I didn't choose them, but I'm pleased."

"Then we have two together! The only one I'm not taking is Criminal Justice." He bit his lip, considering it. "Professor Skywalker, he teaches Ethics, can seem...standoffish at times, but he does have a good heart."

"I've met my share of men like that," she said, smiling softly as her thoughts turned to the man she concentrated on not thinking of every hour, every day. "But that is good, that there are two together. At least I know I'll know someone in those two classes."
