"I'm Seregil i Korit Solun Meringill Bokethera, but just Seregil is fine. Pleased to meet you, not new Andrew."

Andrew was mentally chastising himself for being so uncool, and he totally missed most of what Seregil just said, except the last part. "No, just Andrew," he blurted out with a grimace. "Nice to meet you, er..."

He shrugged. "I'm sorry, can we start over?"

Seregil chuckled. "If you like. Hello, person I haven't met before."

"Hello, new student. My name is Andrew, it is very nice to meet you," he said with a grin, holding his hand.

"Likewise," Seregil said, clasping Andrew's hand as he'd seen others doing in the crowd. "I'm Seregil." He decided to leave off the rest as it had confused Andrew the first time.

"Seregil? That's a pretty name. Pretty name for a pretty, um... So where are you from?" Andrew asked brightly.

Seregil's smile grew a bit wider at Andrew's babbling. "Another dimension," he said. "I've been living in the city of Rhiminee in the kingdom of Skala. Which I'm sure you've probably never heard of."

Andrew nodded. "Can't say that I have, but that's just one of the perks of going to school centered around a dimensional nexus, right? You get to meet a lot of really interesting people. My big sib is an alien. Have you met yours yet?"

Andrew couldn't help but stare at the other boy. He had pretty eyes.

Seregil nodded. "Kabuto Yakushi. I don't think he's an alien. Though he did pull the whole vanish in a puff of smoke trick, which I suppose was supposed to impress me. He was gone then so I couldn't tell him, I learned that one myself from my uncle."

"Oh, so you're like a wizard or a mage or one of those types?" Andrew asked. "Is magic pretty common where you're from?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] therhimineecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Fairly common," Seregil said. "Not everyone can do it, but everyone knows about it."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"But you can?" he asked, figuring maybe he had just missed the question the first time around.

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] therhimineecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Actually, I was dismissed from my apprenticeship to a wizard because magic doesn't work right around me," Seregil admitted.

Andrew wasn't sure if it was a touchy subject, but he decided to move away from it anyway. "So, ah, are you leaving behind anyone special? A, um, girlfriend, or..."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] therhimineecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm currently... unattached," Seregil said. "To either gender."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." Andrew started to turn a light shade of red. "Is it getting hot out here?" he asked, reaching up to tug at the neckline of his sweater.

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] therhimineecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Seregil smiled. "How about you, Andrew? Do you have anyone special?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Andrew frowned. "I did," he said. "I had a boyfriend, Neil, but he had to leave school last week. His mother got sick and they pulled him out. I'll, um, never see him again."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] therhimineecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry," Seregil said. "He's from another dimension?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Another time," Andrew replied. "He's from a very conservative era. His parents would have never approved, and, well, deep down I always felt like his family would eventually take precedence over us." Andrew was surprised to hear himself admit that.

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] therhimineecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry," Seregil said again. "I'm not saying it's so in your situation, but sometimes family should take precedence over dalliances." His eyes were a little haunted as he spoke. "Not doing so can have very bad consequences. But it's always horrible to lose someone you care about."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"I..." Andrew suddenly found himself feeling ashamed; in all that had happened, he had not thought about how important Neil might be to his family, only how important Neil was to him. "No, you're right. Neil needs to be with his family. I just..." There were a great many things Andrew could have said here, thought about saying, but he really didn't want to come across as emotionally broken right now. "...need to remind myself about that more often," he finished carefully.

"What about your family?" Seregil asked, changing the focus a little. "Are you close to them?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't have much of a family," Andrew responded. "I've got an older brother, but we don't talk. And we were pretty much brought up by an aunt who resented us." He left it at that, not wanting to go into further details, and already looking very uncomfortable.

"You?"

My father disowned me because I murdered someone and destroyed his life's work. Seregil swallowed a hysterical laugh at imagining the reaction if he did say that. No, some things were better off not being brought into the light. "I haven't been in contact with them for a few years," he said instead. It was the truth, if not his choice.
