Seregil smiled. "How about you, Andrew? Do you have anyone special?"

Andrew frowned. "I did," he said. "I had a boyfriend, Neil, but he had to leave school last week. His mother got sick and they pulled him out. I'll, um, never see him again."

"I'm sorry," Seregil said. "He's from another dimension?"

"Another time," Andrew replied. "He's from a very conservative era. His parents would have never approved, and, well, deep down I always felt like his family would eventually take precedence over us." Andrew was surprised to hear himself admit that.

"I'm sorry," Seregil said again. "I'm not saying it's so in your situation, but sometimes family should take precedence over dalliances." His eyes were a little haunted as he spoke. "Not doing so can have very bad consequences. But it's always horrible to lose someone you care about."

"I..." Andrew suddenly found himself feeling ashamed; in all that had happened, he had not thought about how important Neil might be to his family, only how important Neil was to him. "No, you're right. Neil needs to be with his family. I just..." There were a great many things Andrew could have said here, thought about saying, but he really didn't want to come across as emotionally broken right now. "...need to remind myself about that more often," he finished carefully.

"What about your family?" Seregil asked, changing the focus a little. "Are you close to them?"

"I don't have much of a family," Andrew responded. "I've got an older brother, but we don't talk. And we were pretty much brought up by an aunt who resented us." He left it at that, not wanting to go into further details, and already looking very uncomfortable.

"You?"

My father disowned me because I murdered someone and destroyed his life's work. Seregil swallowed a hysterical laugh at imagining the reaction if he did say that. No, some things were better off not being brought into the light. "I haven't been in contact with them for a few years," he said instead. It was the truth, if not his choice.

Andrew nodded, relieved that Seregil hadn't asked any other questions about his family. Thinking it best to change the subject entirely, Andrew asked, "So what do you do for fun? Have any hobbies?"

"There's a number of things I'm learning that I find pleasure in," Seregil said vaguely, relieved at the change of subject.

"Do you like comic books?" Andrew asked, looking for some common ground.

Seregil frowned slightly. "What are comic books?"

Andrew's eyes went a little wide. "They're like stories that are drawn out -- fully illustrated." He thought about how to better explain them, but came up blank. "I'll have to show you some sometime. I'm in room 201 if you ever get the chance to swing by."

"I've been assigned room 506," Seregil replied. "If you want to swing by there..."

"506," Andrew repeated to himself. "One of my best friends is up on the fifth floor and I spend a lot of time there. I'll make a point to come visit."

He smiled at Seregil and laughed a little nervous laugh.

"Good," Seregil said, returning the smile. "There's a lot I need to learn about this place. I could use a native guide to ask."
