Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Zoe was making her way around the grounds with Grace, getting a feel for what the crowd was like, and trying to greet as many new people as she could. She smiled when she spotted a student she hadn't seen before. "Hi there," she said. "Welcome."

"Uh, hi," Max replied. She hadn't expected anyone to talk to her. Especially not a woman with a baby. "Thanks."

"I'm Principal Washburn," she said, by way of introduction, "and this is Grace."

The Principal. Max was pretty sure that meant she was in charge. She wondered if she was about to get booted. "I'm Max," she replied, giving a finger wave to the baby.

She wasn't jealous at all that the baby was with her mother, oh no.

Grace smiled and made a babbling noise at Max.

"She says hello," Zoe said. "You're a new arrival, right? Did you have any trouble finding us?"

Okay, so not getting kicked out. Interesting.

"Actually, I sort of stumbled upon you," Max admitted, curious to see what kind of reaction that would get. "I'm not really sure where ~~or when~~ I am."

Stumbling seemed to be more and more common to Zoe, so she managed to set aside her surprise after a moment, to switch gears. "Oh. You're in a place called Fandom, in Virginia, in the United States," she said. She could add the Earth part later, if it seemed necessary.

"I knew I was in Virginia," Max said. It was probably good that Zoe didn't add the Earth part.

"I... was looking for someone. A relative that's been missing for a number of years. Somehow I ended up here."

"Who is it you're looking for?" Zoe asked. "They might be here."

"His name is Seth," Max said. "At least, that was the name he was using last time I saw him."

Zoe frowned softly, shaking her head. "We don't have any students here by that name, and I can't think of anyone in town with that name either. He might be here though, if you think he's using an alias. Or he might be another new student that I don't know yet."

That made Max hopeful. "I guess... with this being a school and all... I wouldn't be able to stick around and check things out, huh?"

"You would be if you were a student as well," Zoe said, smiling gently.

"You mean... I could become a student here?" Max repeated.

"We have plenty of room for enrollment," Zoe offered. "You'd have to follow the school rules, of course, but this is a safe place where you could look for your relative. Do you have any desire to go to school?"

Max shrugged. "I've never had any formal schooling," she admitted. "I guess it couldn't hurt."

Zoe was very pleased with herself for potentially reeling another teenager into a world of rules and education. "You might find the classes here to be a little less...formal than at regular schools," she said. "But you certainly wouldn't be the only one for whom this is a new experience."

"Well, I suppose I can give it a shot," Max said. If nothing else, it might be a good cover for any less than legal jobs she decided to take to finance her search. "What do I need to do?"

"You should probably go to the main office. They'll have the information you need to get registered. Tell them I sent you, and that they'd better not give you any trouble."

Max gave her a smile. "Thanks, I appreciate that, Principal Washburne."

"You're very welcome," she said. "I hope to see you around. Just not in my office getting into trouble."
