Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

Sokka cocked his head. "I thought you said your name was 'Coraline'?" he asked.

"It is, but almost everyone seems to call me Caroline," she said with a very small sigh. "It's not as if they're even that similar."

"No, they're not," Sokka agreed, scratching his head with a frown. "Uh, still sorry, though."

Then he grinned at her. "Anyway! Yeah, I'm your big brother, and I'm here to show you around and answer your questions and stuff. It's... uh. REALLY weird here, so you'll probably have a lot of questions. ...Do you have any questions?"

She grinned at him. "I don't know where to start. What if I start asking questions and miss out on something important?" she asked, but she thought about it. "Asking how weird weird is might be a good one, though."

"Don't worry. You'll catch the important things. They're hard to miss." He grinned. "How weird are you used to? There are people here from the past, and the future, and different worlds, and there are giant turtle-turtles, except I think they left, and big blue monsters, and people with all sort of magic and powers and things."

He hooked a thumb at his chest. "I'm a warrior," he added. "If you need me to, I can protect you."

"I thought I knew what weird was," she said, a little dazed and a little excited. "I can see I was wrong." It never occurred to Coraline to question what he was telling her. "Is there a mouse circus, by any chance?"

"I've never met a warrior, before. That's very kind of you," she told him, even though she preferred to protect herself. "Do you think it will be necessary?"

"Mouse circus? I don't think so," Sokka mused. "Why? Were you going to start one? That'd be pretty cool."

"Uh. Things attack the island all the time, actually. But you can usually avoid them just by staying inside. And that's not counting the gremlins, but they don't actually hurt people, they just bite."

"I'm not, but I know someone who may or may not have a mouse circus. It seemed as if it would fit in here," she explained. "Don't the gremlin bites hurt?"

Coraline knew, if she was going to avoid them, she'd have to make sure she learned exactly what it was she was avoiding. "Where would I find a gremlin, do you think?" she asked thoughtfully.

"You don't want to go find them," Sokka replied. "I mean, yeah, the bites probably hurt, but they're not bad or anything. The real problem is that they make you go INSANE for a few hours. Like, totally nuts. If you meet Luke, ask him about the tiger."

"They make people go insane?" she asked, eyes bright with interest. "Did Luke turn into a tiger? Or think he'd turned into a tiger?"

"He thought his robot was a tiger. And he thought HE was a magician or something." Sokka sniggered. "And Jim thought he was a singer. And Valentine thought he was a director. Except he sort of is."

That decided it for Coraline. She would find a gremlin. She'd just be careful. "It sounds very random, the effects. Do they last for long?"

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Not very?" Sokka hazarded. "I mean, Fandom throws out some pretty weird stuff, but it only ever lasts a day or two. Sometimes a week."

[identity profile] advicefrommice.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Sokka," Coraline said after thinking about that for a bit. "I think this school might be a little bit weird."

Sokka stared at her.

"That's what... I mean, I just... I was saying..."

He sighed.

"You know what? I think you might be right!"

And Coraline grinned at him. "I was only teasing you," she said, pleased that it had gone so well. She didn't have a great deal of practice.

"Uh... Yeah," Sokka said. "I knew that! I was just... I knew that." He grinned and slapped her on the back. "You're starting to fit in already!"
