Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

"You found him," Lee said, half smiling. "I'm Lee Adama. You're Ferris? My new and only roommate. You don't have a stick with you, do you?"

Ferris was relieved that his direct approach had worked so efficiently. "I could probably get one, but on me? No. I have me, what I'm wearing, a lucky rabbit's foot, a couple of fivers and a suitcase that my parents decided was all I needed for my first few weeks here. But enough about me. Who's this guy I'm going to be living with?"

"Lucky...whatever," Lee said, he'd ask about that later. "Lee Adama from Caprica. Nowhere near here. My last roommate had some kind of mystical stick that he liked to play with. Not dirty. I've been here for one semester so far."

Mystical stick. Right. It wasn't the craziest thing he'd heard. "I'm here for a semester too. Only one, with any luck and a little good behavior on my part." That wasn't going to happen. "I haven't heard of Caprica, but I'm sure it's as good a place as any to grow up. I'm from Chicago myself. A little suburb in the north called Shermer. It's not much, but it's home. Or was. Now this fine institution is home for the next few months so I can get my high school diploma. It's not as easy as they make it out to be."

Lee's first impression was that this kid talked quick. "So, this a punishment for you or something? Troublemaker back home so they dumped you over here?"

"I prefer to think of it as a forced vacation more than the indentured servitude it really is. Technically, I completed all of the requirements of the high school diploma. There may have been an incident with the Dean of Students at my old school involving graduation and, well, I'd rather not talk about it, but I wouldn't call myself a troublemaker. I'm more of a," he thought about it for a moment, "opportunist. What about you? Punishment or reward?"

"Neither," Lee grumbled, frowning briefly. "I'm here because my father thought it would be good for me. Okay, so maybe it's punishment. In a way."

"Fathers have a habit of thinking they know best when really, they have no idea. Despite the circumstances, I have no intention of brooding my way through the semester. Lee, we have a unique opportunity here. Our parents are goodness knows how many light years away," he explained, not knowing that Lee's parents were actually light years away, "And adult supervision here is paid by the hour. We're basically free men and how many teenagers back home have that kind of luxury?"

"Not many," Lee answered with a nod. "So, we're free men. No parents. Little supervision. A small yet booming town. Suggestions?"

"All in good time. Today, I highly recommend mingling. The more people you know, the easier it is to find someone to help you out when you have plans to hit the town. I have to go and find my 'big sibling', but I think we'll have plenty of time later to talk and make plans for the months ahead."

"You know where to find me," Lee said and nodded. "Have fun mingling, avoid taking off your shirt and I'll see you later, Ferris."

Ferris paused, contemplating the 'taking off your shirt' comment, gave a smile and disappeared into the crowd.
