Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

There was something about him that reminded her a little bit of Wes, though Jen couldn't quite place how or why; mostly, she knew she felt a little bit more at ease around him than she'd normally be in a completely unfamiliar situation. "Call me Jen," she said. "Shock? I've been told this place is a little unusual, but shock?"

"Little unusual might be a slight understatement," Dean said. "Where are you from, Jen?"

"Some handwavey because it was never named WTF city, Earth, in the year 3000," Jen said carefully, half expecting him to tell her she was crazy.

Dean nodded. "You'll probably have less shocking things to deal with than some," he said. "It's the students from the past that have the real problems."

Students from the past? That time vortex was starting to make sense now, and Jen filed that bit of information away.

"Is that normal around here?" she asked. "People from different time periods?"

"Yep," Dean said with a nod. "Sometimes it's not a big difference -- it's actually 1999 where my family's from so not too much with the culture shock -- but there's people from centuries in the past, as well as some like you from the future." He paused. "Not to mention those from space or other dimensions. Or other dimensions in space."

Different times and dimensions? Yes, that definitely explained a lot.

And raised a few questions of its own.

"Is it stable, though?" asked Jen. "All of those timelines and dimensions . . . it seems almost like it would be dangerous to the fabric of time."

"It's been stable all the time I've been here," Dean said. "There was the time during the plague when we were cut off, but that was special circumstances."

Jen tilted her head minutely to the right, her eyes narrowing just a bit. "This isn't a normal school, I'm guessing." To understate massively.

"That would be putting it mildly," Dean confirmed. "It's more... a school for those who need a place where they don't have to hide secrets or weirdness."

I think you'll be safe there, Alex had said.

"It's like I ended up right where I needed to be," Jen said, half to herself and rather surprised. "Again."

"Does that happen to you a lot?"

Jen smiled wryly. "Not that I'm complaining about lucking out here, but two out of two crash landings? Those are ridiculously good odds."

"Never look a gift horse -- or school -- in the mouth, that's my motto," Dean told her.
