Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

"Yeah, hi," he said, taking her hand. "It's nice to meet you. Welcome to Fandom. Did you have any trouble getting here?"

Trouble getting here? No.

Trouble with being convinced to get here? Rao, yes.

"No, I actually found it pretty easily," she said, nodding. She probably kept her hand in his for a moment too long before letting go. "Thanks."

It was amazing how his time with Dawn didn't help Sam feel like less of a dork around pretty girls.

"Good, that's good," he said. "Well, uh, if you have any questions, I can answer them. My brother and I both go here, and my dad's a teacher, and I'm almost very soon to be related to the principal, so in my biased opinion, you're in good hands."

"That's good to know," she said with a smile. "Your dad's dating the principal?" she asked after a beat, as realization dawned on her.

This guy, he was...sort of powerful here. At the school.

"Well, I've already met my roommate, Turtle, and that was...interesting. She mentioned something about anthromorphic turtles." Kara blinked for a moment. "This isn't the world's most normal school, is it?"

"They're engaged, actually. It just happened at Christmas," Sam said with a grin.

When she mentioned the weirdness, he couldn't help but snicker. "Um. Yeah, things are kind of weird around here. You might have to stay open-minded about what people are capable of."

Which means that the need for a secret identity might be a little...unneeded.

She considered that for a moment. "Oh, trust me," Kara said, her vivid blue eyes glittering with interest at what Sam had just said. "I've got one hell of an open mind." She grinned and asked, "How did you adjust to the weirdness? And...what other sorts of weirdness are there here?"

"Well, I sort of grew up around weirdness," Sam said. "My family hunts demons and ghosts." It was strange how easy that was to admit these days. "So it wasn't too strange to come here and find out that there are people with super strength, or who can move things with their mind, among other things."

I come from an exploded planet that was located light years away.

Yes, because that's what she's going to tell him.

Instead, Kara merely chuckled. "I come from this incredibly small town where we've got a new freak every single week." She shrugged. "We've got an abundance of, umm, meteor rocks there, and they tend to have an odd effect on a lot of the town's inhabitants."

"That sounds interesting," Sam said. "You might not have that much trouble here then, although we only get new freaks when the semesters change."

"Is there a lot of action that goes down here?" She asks.

For a moment, Sam was torn between his usual desire to protect people from the truth, and his sibling duty to fill Kara in.

"There's some," he finally admitted. "Not every week, but often enough to keep things from being too normal."

Kara grins. "This might actually be more fun than I gave it credit for."

"This is a very fun place to be, I assure you," Sam said. "I really like it here."

"It seems like it," Kara said with a look around. It also seemed a lot less duller than Smallville, Kansas. "How long have you and your brother been here?" she asked.
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"About a year and a half," he said. "Our dad sent us here for the summer, and when it came time for the regular school year, we decided to stay."

Kara nods. Something about him leads her to instinctively trust him.

It's not a naive thing. She just...does.

"Let's hope I like it as much as you do," she said. "Are there any general rules I need to know? When we can or can't go in to town or if there's a curfew that I need to know about or anything?"

"The rules are pretty lenient, all things considered. There's no curfew or anything, unless something's gone wrong. We had a blackout one time, so people weren't allowed out of dorm for safety," Sam said. "Other than that, unless you're planning on blowing things up in a common room, you should be okay."

Kara nods.

She wasn't really planning on causing any trouble.

Unless trouble found her, of course.

She gave Sam her brightest, prettiest smile.

"I'm pretty sure you, you know, volunteered and stuff to be a big brother to someone, but I really appreciate all the help, Sam. I'd, you know, like to treat you to coffee sometime. Or dinner. In a non-datey sort of way."

It's not that she didn't think he was cute, it's just that she was still new and she wanted friends first. Plus, cute guys? Usually had girlfriends attached.

"I will never turn down an offer for coffee, just so you know," Sam said, laughing. "And we could do a non-datey dinner, 'cause I'd really like my girlfriend to like you."

[identity profile] kara-kent.livejournal.com 2008-01-06 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"That would be good," she grinned. "I could use a couple of good friends around here, without any of the girlfriends thinking I'm trying to hone in on their man." Because that had sort of become a problem back home.
