Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[~~WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE.~~ OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

Alex, with her nametag carefully adorned on her shirt, looked around for someone with the name 'Hoshi'. It sounded like a girl's name to her, so that's what she was keeping an eye out for.

Hoshi was absentmindedly wandering around the picnic. She had all of her paperwork for the new semester, but after checking her schedule and making she she hadn't been signed up for any weird classes, she hadn't looked any further. It was too bad since there was also a notice about her big sibling assignment.

Fortunately, Hoshi was wearing a nametag.

And fortunately for Alex, she happened to catch sight of the nametag. Smiling, the young girl made her way towards her big sibling.

"Excuse me, Hoshi?"

Hoshi was jolted out of her glee over getting good classes this semester. "Yes, I'm Hoshi. Do I know you?" she asked, puzzled.

"Uh, not really," Alex admitted, shaking her head slightly. "We were paired together for the Big/Little Sibling program?"

"We were?" asked Hoshi, still confused. Then she remembered that one envelope that she hadn't opened. "Oh!" she said. "I'm your big sibling? Wow, um, hi. I'm Hoshi. Welcome to Fandom!"

"Yep," Alex chuckled a tiny bit. "Thanks. I'm Alex," she grinned. "It's good to meet you."

"Are you finding your way around? Not sure what year it is?" asked Hoshi, thinking back to how confused she was on her first day in Fandom.

"So far, so good," Alex admitted, smiling warmly. She had to admit that her nervous feeling had just about disappeared. "I'm good with the year, too, though I was told that a few people are from different times."

"Yeah, I was one of those lucky ones," said Hoshi. "I'm from 2144. Actually, they should be in 2145 already at home. The technology wasn't had to get used to, but we don't use currency at home and I had to figure out how to use money and where to obtain more of it. You don't have any questions on how to use money, do you?"

"Oh wow, really?" Alex was intrigued. "That's really cool! No, I'm pretty okay with the money part," she admitted. "Is it hard getting used to this place?" Hey, she was a tiny bit nervous about that.

"It can depend on how different it is from your home," replied Hoshi. "But I'm probably an example of the worst-case scenario, being home-schooled and then suddenly dropped at a school 140 years in the past. What helped was finding people who I could go to for help and making some good friends who could help me get settled."

Alex nodded, realizing this place wasn't that different from back home. "I'm hoping to make some friends here, yeah," she smiled, knowing she still had Harper at home.

Hoshi smiled back. "Hanging out in the common rooms can be helpful with making friends. If you cook, make plenty extra because you'll have lots of people dropping in. Other than that, the only important thing is to keep up in your classes, unless you're taking Barney Stinson's class. I worked really hard in that one and in the end, he gave out A's to anyone who went streaking in town and got mentioned on the radio," she added. Hoshi would be bitter if she hadn't accidentally streaked and gotten her A.

"Okay, I'll definitely make sure to do that," Alex nodded, meaning it. "Actually, I am taking his class," she admitted. "Oh wow, really?"

"I think he's got a co-teacher this time, so maybe there won't be streaking as a final exam," said Hoshi. "Either way, that's a class you don't want to knock yourself out for. I was even his TA and I can tell you that Professor Stinson is really odd."

"Oh, okay," Alex nodded, wondering what the class would be like this time around. "Much like this school?" She was joking. Mostly.

"It's a little odd, but it's a fun sort of odd," said Hoshi. "Where else can you have a god teaching a modeling class or find drunk squirrels working on news reports?"

"Well, I'm glad to hear that," and really, she was. "Yeah, that's a very good point."

"You should be just fine," said Hoshi. "Let me know if you need any help with anything, though. I work Wednesdays at the Arms Hotel and you'll find me cooking sometimes in the fourth floor common room, though I'll hang out in any common room where there's a chance that I'll get to help in the kitchen."

"Thanks," Alex smiled brightly. "I will definitely do that," she nodded, liking her big sibling the moment she met her. "Okay, good to know. If I need anything, I'll be sure to find you."

The more Hoshi thought about it, the more excited she got about having a little sibling. Her own big sibling was pretty important to her and now Hoshi had a chance to help someone else out. "And good luck with your classes, especially with the Stinson one," she added.

"Thanks," Alex grinned. "I'm hoping it will be an okay one."
