Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

"Kind of a big career change," Kerrigan said, a slight smirk tugging on her mouth.

"After my father's passing I felt that my priorities needed to be on helping my family through this difficult time," Nathan said. "It's my honor to be able to take on the noble task of teaching while I do it."

If that came off like a planned soundbite... well, it was Nathan.

Oh, yeah, he definitely reminded her of Arcturus. Kerrigan rolled her eyes and snorted, mostly good-naturedly, "Yeah, that'll last right until you meet the kids."

"I've met some of Peter's friends," Nathan said. Which was his diplomatic way of saying that his expectations for some of them were not too high.

"If you've got a kid called Adama in your class, do us all a favor and throw something at him," she returned. Some grudges just went deep. "You got a relative here?"

"Peter Petrelli's my brother," Nathan said. "He's a junior. What'd the Adama kid do?"

"Vandalized my office," Kerrigan said shortly. Moving on... "Did Peter fill you in on the specifics of Fandom?"

"His latest story was something about a vampire," Nathan said, figuring that was a good way to try to prompt more information without giving up more than he had to. "That what you had in mind?"

"Vampires, aliens and the time-displaced," Kerrigan said, trying to figure out if she could remember anyone named Peter Petrelli beyond radio broadcast stuff. "Fandom High is open to every man, woman and small fuzzy creature in the multiverse."

Yeah, she couldn't make anything sound anywhere near as much as a serious soundbite as most of what seemed to come out of Nathan's mouth.

Nathan couldn't help but glance around. "Aliens?"

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Met a few," she shrugged. "Best to keep the options open."

"Is Adama an alien?" Nathan asked, mostly because he was trying to get a baseline on Kerrigan's perceptions of the world around her.

"I'm pretty sure he's mostly just annoying." Kerrigan cocked her head at him. Questioning her sanity. Nice. "Ask people about Fandom weirdness," she said, "They'll fill you in better. Any other questions, I'm here. I'll tag by your office on your first week, too."

Seemed like a teaching buddy kind of thing to do.

...

She hated Aly so much right now.

"Thanks," Nathan said. "I appreciate the help."

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, yeah," she snorted, "If you meet Aly, be careful. She's got one too many tricks up her sleeve." Like getting the unwilling buddying around. "Anything you want to know before I head out to pilfer some food?"

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] 1petrelli1.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Where's a guy go to get good food around here?" Nathan asked.

"There's Cafe Fina," Kerrigan offered, after a moment. Quality of food was still a mostly new concept for her. "Ching Tai for Chinese. I usually end up grabbing pizza instead, but I hear those places are good."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] 1petrelli1.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Pizza here any good or are we talking Domino's?" Nathan asked.

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not sure what Domino's is," Kerrigan countered, "But there's no pizza like the local, and I've had a bunch."

[identity profile] 1petrelli1.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll give it a try," Nathan said. "Maybe sometime when you're free you could show me the sights."

Not that it was a huge island, but still. Couldn't hurt to get the opinions of someone who wasn't a sixteen year old boy.

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Kerrigan shrugged. Again. "Got nothing but class on Thursdays. I can give you the newbie tour sometime before then if you want it." There was a faint air of resigned and smirking to that, because--

Stupid thing to say. If there was anything the last few weeks had taught her, it was that she had to stop hanging out with people who liked to talk like soundbites.

"This place gets a little lethal," she had to add, just to clarify.

[identity profile] 1petrelli1.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"I teach on Wednesday," Nathan said. "But I'm sure we could work something out. And lethal? How so?"

From the casual tone it'd be hard to tell how avidly interested he was in the information. Unless you were a mindreader so... yeah.

Someone was a little protective. Hm. Not just politician, then.

Funny how a couple of months got you used to this place. "This is why they should give you guys a tour built-in," Kerrigan said, "Point you out to the locations of all the latest invasions."

"They tend to leave a bit off the brochure," Nathan said.

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"You could say that," Kerrigan agreed, shifting her weight. "Honestly, I'm surprised you even got the luxury of a brochure."
