Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

Romeo noticed the nametag. "Newfound cos!," he greeted with a smile that was as eager as it was shy. "So kind of the school to give me a sibling."

"The administration is thoughtful like that," John replied, offering his hand. "John Sheppard. I take it you're Romeo?"

"That is my name," he agreed, taking the proffered hand. "I appreciate the administration, then. Are you to Fandom native?"

"Native? Uh, no. I'm just a student," John said, starting to wonder about his new sib's syntax. "So where are you from, Romeo?"

"Verona Beach, on the ocean in California," Romeo said. "I am to be a junior here, I believe. From where did you come?" He was blissfully unaware of any concerns about his syntax thus far.

"Hey, do you surf?" John asked interestedly. "I'm also a junior. From L.A., most recently."

"I have," Romeo said, and felt a stab at losing Mercutio, who had been much more impressive on the waves than he ever was. "I did not bring my board or suit, though. It has been some months since I surfed."

"Verona is close to L.A."

"Once it's warmer out, I'll show you what passes for waves in Fandom," John grinned, pleased to have found a potential surfing buddy and figuring he could find equipment somewhere.

"I'm not much for geography," John admitted.

"I look forward to it," Romeo said, meaning it. "What else is there to do in Fandom?"

"Oh, there's tons of stuff to do," John said. "The town is full of stores and there's a bar where they don't card students. If you're interested in specific activities, I can point you in the right direction."

"The bar sounds most pleasant," Romeo confided. "I have been told not to drink, yet it can be such a comfort." He paused. "Is there a church and a bookstore?"

John nodded, "Yep, Fandom's got it all. Why don't you drink, if you don't mind me asking?"

"I do," Romeo said hastily. "My tutor, Father Lawrence, said it made men mad, and I had too much madness in me." He paused. "I was not always the best pupil."

"Studying's not really my thing either," John told him. "But madness? That sounds kinda harsh."

Romeo thought about explaining why it wasn't, but it seemed like a lot to dump on a new friend, even a new sibling. "Perhaps," he assented. "He was sometimes ... harsh, as you say. It seems good teachers often are." He shrugged it off. "Speaking of those who teach, do you know ..." he glanced at his card of classes "... Professors Skywalker, Biff, Stinson or Bell?"

"Oh, you're in for a hell of a semester," John grinned. "Professor Skywalker is a great teacher, really. If you can manage to ignore the part where he's a complete jerk. And I hear Stinson's a real piece of work, but an easy A."

"I am not surprised the teachers here have their quirks," Romeo said. "My father would be pleased by an A, even in being 'cool.' As would I."

He glanced across the park. "I ought to find my roommate," he said. "But I shall be in touch, should Fandom confuse me."

"Hey, I'm always around if you need help," John said, smiling. "Enjoy the picnic."
