Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

Aravis really could hardly believe she was supposed to really affix that damn...sticky bit of paper with her name on it to her, but she did, and looked around for someone who looked like his name might be Harry.

Harry, meanwhile, was searching for someone who might be named Aravis. And apparently he'd found her. Unless there was more than one person named Aravis on this island.

"Uh, hi. I'm Harry Dresden," he said, then glanced down at the name tag stuck to his chest. "And you can read, so pretend that introducing myself isn't actually as lame as I think it was."

She had to smile a little at that. "Aravis. Welcome to the island, Harry. And it's always nice to actually make an introduction, rather than just expect me to read it off your chest."

Hopefully she wasn't smiling because she thought he was an idiot. "Right. Okay then. Nice to meet you Aravis. Have you, ah, been here long?"

[also I am lame and disappearing for a few hours.]

"Since last summer," she said, nodding once. "It takes a bit to get used to, and I apologize for that, since I do remember that. From where do you hail?"

Okay, so the assigned big sibling talked a little funny. At least it wasn't in Latin. Harry hated Latin.

"Missouri," Harry said. "At least, that's where I've been the past couple years. What about you? Not around here, right?"

She shook her head. "Archenland. It's in another world. By the way, there are people from other worlds here. And other times. And space."

She figured it was best to get it all out at once.

"...That's what Bob meant by weird people," Harry said, mostly to himself. "Other worlds like parallel dimensions? Or like other planets? Or what? And you mean that or is this some weird hazing thing?"

He had a talking skull in his backpack, so he wouldn't really be surprised either way.

"Like all of that. And I don't know what that means," she admitted. "Oh! And there is electricity! Do not be afraid of it." She nodded. It had been the weirdest thing for her, anyway.

"I think electricity's more afraid of me than I am of it," Harry said. Yeah, he knew that probably didn't make sense. And? "You don't have electricity back home then?"

"No, nor the water indoors," she said, shaking her head. "It's exciting. We use candles." She tilted her head. "And how do you mean, it's more afraid of you?"

"No indoor plumbing?" And Harry thought life was Ebenezar was roughing it, sometimes. "Huh. And I just have a tendency to break electronics. It's a thing with me."

"On purpose?" she asked skeptically.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] harrydresden.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Hardly ever on purpose," Harry answered, trying out an innocent expression. Or what he thought was an innocent expression.

She raised her eyebrow. "You must be very clumsy."

[identity profile] harrydresden.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Harry had a feeling he was going to learn to fear that eyebrow. "Not really. Not usually anyway. It just kind of happens. I don't even have to do anything."

"Don't go near the television in the fourth floor common room," she said warily. "I like it too much."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] harrydresden.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Your television is safe from me," Harry said. "What about the other common rooms? Fair game?"

He wasn't really planning on going on a TV-killing spree, but you never knew when that sort of thing might be necessary.

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't care about those," she said dismissively. "But fourth floor is where I live and so do a few of my friends and my boyfriend. Where's your room?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] harrydresden.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Fifth floor," Harry said, pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket to doublecheck. "506."

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Not too hard to find at all," she said, almost cheerfully. "Got a roommate?"

"Someone named Seregil. At least I think that's a name and not a title or anything. Haven't met them yet."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Spring 2008)

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
"It's possible, though I thought I knew all of us that have titles around here," she said thoughtfully. "Unless they're new, too."

[identity profile] harrydresden.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"You have a title?"

"Lady Aravis of Anvard. Or Tarkheena, if you'd prefer," she said, shrugging. "Don't use it much, though. There's not much use. Everyone's on equal footing here."
