Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was thankfully behaving, so it was fairly warm outside as everything was set up for the picnic. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP, HAVE AT IT. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

Oh thank god, another girl, and blond to boot. Well, Dōjima always had wished for a sister.

Flouncing up to the other girl, Dōjima pulled her sunglasses down slightly to examine the girl blearily. "Naminé-sama? Sugoi...you're absolutely adorable!"

Eyes flickering to the sign she grinned devilishly and pulled a glittery pen from her pocket. "Ay-ya. They lied to you. Dou - shi - ma. Is easy." Sticking out her tongue in concentration, she leaned over to draw a neat line through the 'Yurika'. "All better!"

Naminé flushed, laughing at the other girl's assessment. "My apologies," she said. "I wasn't sure which would be your proper name. It's very nice to meet you, Dōjima. Welcome to Fandom. I'm your ... my, it seems presumptuous to call myself your sister, doesn't it?"

"Yurika is girly, even for me," she explained, waving the pen for emphasis. "I mean, do I look like a lily flower? No way, just call me Dōjima, everyone else does."

"Lily flower?" Naminé smiled. "That sounds pretty. But I suppose if it doesn't suit you, that's far more important. I've only the one name myself. It has something to do with ocean waves, I've been told."

"Kawaii! With big blue eyes like that, it suits you!" Dōjima grinned at Naminé, still twirling her pen. "I'm too loud to be a lily, much to my parents' eternal chagrin. Hence, my enrollment at Fandom, where I hopefully cannot be too much of an embarrassment from across the ocean."

Naminé blushed again, feeling caught up in the other girl's enthusiasm. "They sent you away? I'm so sorry. Will you miss them? It's very nice here, you know. Lots of good people. That should help."

"It's got to be better than my last boarding school. The uniform there? Dreadful. They made us wear knee-length skirts in winter!" Dōjima shuddered. "Nah, I won't miss them. The less I hear my mother nag me about marriage, the better."

"We haven't any uniforms," she reassured quickly. "In fact, people wear ... an amazing variety of things." This was her attempt at tact. "... Your mother wants you to be married? We're a bit young for that, aren't we?"

"Well, I get a year or two once I'm out of high school, but that's it! Then it's time for babies! Yuck." Dōjima flopped down on the ground to watch the passing students. "I'm an only child, so it's my duty to make a political marriage and carry on the honor of the Dōjima Clan, blah blah blah whatever."

"That seems horribly unfair," Naminé said, frowning. "What if you're not inclined to such things? Your life shouldn't be subject to their dictates, in such important matters as that."

"Welcome to Japan," she said dryly, "Where Daddy is king of the household. It's a very male-oriented society, especially in the older generations. That was the one good thing about some of my boarding schools; they sent me to a few in Europe, and those ones weren't quite so fawning over the male students."

"Surprisingly, the all-girls schools were wretched. Never go to an all-girls school, it's terrifying."

"It seems as though it would be ... catty," Naminé said, making a face. And then her eyes twinkled. "And it would be a shame to miss out on the male half of things, I think."

"Mmmmm...no kidding." Dōjima looked dreamy for a moment before shaking her head and looking at Naminé. "Hm, I think maybe they gave me the perfect sister."

Naminé laughed. "I'm not so sure. I'm new to this, and ... I'm a little nervous, you know. It's a bit intimidating, meeting people. But I am glad to have met you. I think I'm supposed to be your tour guide, of sorts, if you need one. Which means I should warn you about how strange this island is, but in the nicest sort of way."

Except when men in cloaks found you here and -- okay. No thinking about that. Her smile faltered, but she shook her head. "It's mostly safe here."

"Of course it's only mostly safe, there's boys, right? You can't let your guard down around them! Or around girls like me, but shhh....don't tell the boys that!" Dōjima grinned evilly as she looked at the other students. "But they'll back off once they realize that no doesn't just mean no, no means that I kick really hard!"

"Besides, this is America. America is always strange, at least that's what I hear."

Naminé blushed, at that, and lowered her voice, eyes still dancing somewhat. "The boys here are rather nice," she admitted. "And this island is its own little world, as far as strangeness goes. I'm not so sure about America. My Art professor says it's the best country ever, and I suppose I'm inclined to agree, if only because I'm fond of him."

"So you're not an American? Didn't think so, you seem too sane." Dōjima watched another student walk by and whistled quietly. "Thank you, Daddy, for sending me to the land of the pretty. Seriously, is everyone here attractive?"

"So then, define 'strange'," she said, getting distracted by yet another student. Or teacher. Not sure. "Inquiring minds want to know."

"It seems that way," Naminé laughed. "Some of them are dark and mysterious, and some are tall and sun-kissed, and my, I should be sketching more of them, I think. Except then I'd have to hide my sketchbook around Valentine. As for strange ... reality seems to be a little softer around the edges here than in most places. The walls are less structured. Less real. The insane, the improbable, it happens on a weekly basis. The entire island was struck with amnesia one weekend. It went away Monday morning. No one knows why."

"Uh-huh. Next you'll be telling that the boys are really girls in drag." Dōjima rolled her eyes at her sibling. "Nice try, but you can skip the hazing, Naminé."

Naminé laughed. "Very well. I've done my sisterly duty in warning you. In two months' time, I'll expect an apology."

"You've done your big sister duty in setting a terrible example for me to follow!" she teased. "Oh no, such a role model, teasing the new students! Now I shall have to do the same!"

"I'm a terrible influence," Naminé said with a straight face. "You can't imagine the depths of depravity I can sink to. Shocking. Outrageous. Other such things."

"Joudan ja ne yo! I wouldn't have guessed!" she giggled. "People never suspect the cute ones, we can be terrible and no one would ever believe it."

"Except my parents. They always believe it, but it's hard to argue the point when some paparazzi took photos."

"It's the squirrels you need to watch for here," Naminé said, lowering her voice and glancing around. "Everything that happens ends up on the radio. So if you get terribly drunk and kiss several girls at a party, and your possibly-boyfriend is listening to the broadcast that night?"

"What's wrong with kissing girls?" Dōjima grinned and winked at Naminé. "Girls can kiss just as well as boys, sometimes better, and most boys wouldn't mind two girls kissing."

"Squirrels, huh? That's a good name for the paparazzi. They kinda are rodent-y sometimes."
