Library: Late Thursday Night

Karal didn't think of it as keeping the library open late. He thought of it as opening it early for tomorrow.

Either way, he wasn't leaving.

The tables were littered with a bizarre combination of the magic and the absolutely mundane. Texts on spells and magic mixed with old records, minutes of town meetings, planning permits, building codes, sewerage and water maps, all the boring minutiae that held the history of a town.

There was also coffee and strong, black tea, to keep tired minds and bodies awake and alert.

"Special Collections?" Peter asked. "You know, I've managed to avoid it until now."

"You mean it's 'hard to reach,' right?" Rodney asked hopefully.

"I mean it's dangerous," Karal corrected. "I've never been in, but there are stories."

"I went in there once," Rikku said. "To try to ... bring somebody back from the dead? Instead I blew a big hole in reality. Just being in there made my head hurt."

"I had an inappropriate encounter with a genie," Willow said. "Granted it's no hole in reality, but still - no means no."

Karal took a deep breath. "If that's where the records are, that's where we have to go, no matter how dangerous, or inappropriate, it might be."

Ed stared at her for a moment then stood up and shook out his shoulders.

"Where is this Special Collections? Let's go."

He might have been as interested in the cure as the new part of the library, yes.

"Right over there," Peter said, pointing it out. "Technically we're going to need faculty permission, but technically, screw that."

Which was when a large cat leapt into the middle of the table, staring at each of them in turn, and a very stern voice spoke into each of their minds. :No. You are all too tired to face anything dangerous right now. You all need sleep or you're going to end up hurt. Or dead. Or you will miss what you are looking for. Tomorrow is only a few hours away. We will go in then.:

Willow blinked. Then turned to the table at large. "Everyone else heard the cat talk, right? That wasn't just me?"

Rodney raised his hand silently and continued to stare at the cat.

Peter jumped backwards. "Telepath cat. Of course there's a telepath cat. Wouldn't be Fandom without a telepath cat."

Rikku didn't seem fazed. She'd talked to Altra before.

"He's right," she said calmly. "We're way too tired and fried right now for this. It'd be like going 'hi, just eat my brain, thanks.'"

Ed rolled his eyes. "All this place needed was a scoldy cat. I don't see why we can't get this over with, but fine."

Karal stared at Altra and Altra stared back, tail twitching like a metronome. "The cat talks. Entirely too much at times." Altra glared and Karal's shoulders slumped. "But he and Rikku are right. There are not so many hours until dawn."

And acting in the day light would bring them farther under the Eye of Vkandis, and that was something he would welcome. "In the morning I open the library, I'll come in early. We can meet up and go in then. And, as Peter said, screw faculty permission. This is too important."

Willow raised her hand. "I can bring donuts! And, erm, forged slips if that's a direction we feel a need to go in."

"Is there anything else we need to bring?" Rodney asked since he had no idea what to expect.

Karal smiled at that. "I think, just yourselves. Altra will come with us, and he can offer some measure of protection." He looked meaningfully at the Firecat, who simply nodded. "We do not want to appear as if we are a threat."
