Library [11/15]

Thursday arrived early again on Thursday, setting Friday up in her office. After yesterday's news, she was more than concerned and kept checking on Friday more than was really necessary. She broke from the usual library rules today by making sure there was plenty of coffee, other drinks and food to go around for anyone who wanted to stop by.

After spending his morning in the clinic, Sam was back to do more research. He might not have been getting much done though, with how he was holding a book, but staring off into space.

After vanishing to places unknown the streets during lunch, Cable was back in the library by afternoon, running through building codes.

He did that a little better than magic.

He was also crawling closer to a critical point in his internal countdown. But he wasn't going to think about that.

Peter was going through any and all books on town records he could find in the library, trying to find anything that might support his 'magic asbestos' theory. He could be way off and probably was, but at least it was a direction for him to search in.

Very late in the afternoon, Karal finally returned to the library (still in his robes) and collapsed into a chair, looking a little lost as he poked through the books on the table.

And there was Cable.

With a stack of records.

He dropped it in front of Karal. "Check these for anomalies."

Karal blinked. "All right." He hesitated. "What sort of anomalies?"

"We're testing a theory," Cable responded, crossing his arms. "There may have been some magical residue from this island's past that came loose when the school was destroyed."

He immediately reached for the top record and opened it. A direction, any direction, was like a gift from the Sunlord Himself. "I'll come and tell you if I find anything."

That just got him a nod, and then Cable stalked off, certainty in every step.

The toll would come later, no doubt.

Sokka wasn't entirely sure when the headache had started, but the words on the page were blurring together and nothing he was reading seemed to help any and nobody knew anything and people were dying and...

He threw the book across the room and screamed in frustration.

Then he winced and sat back down, rubbing his forehead painfully. "Okay," he said. "One more time. What are the symptoms?"

Peter looked up and said, "Well, I think one of the early symptoms is a fever."

Sokka wiped some sweat off his forehead -- it was getting hot in here -- and picked up another book. "Yeah, but that doesn't help much," he grumbled. "I mean, fevers are pretty generic."

"A cough has been pretty common, too," Peter said.

Sokka cleared his throat and grimaced at the book in his hands. "Again with the not helpful. I mean" -- a long, sharp cough interrupted whatever it was he was going to say, and he bent nearly double at it played itself out. "Don't" -- cough -- "say anything," he warned Peter. "Just clearing my throat."

"The big sign tends to be a rash," Peter noted, watching Sokka to see if he was actually sick or just a hypochondriac.

Re: Afternoon

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right, right, the rash!" Sokka exclaimed, scratching at his arm. "It's a pretty unique one, too, right? Maybe that'll help?" The itching got worse, and he scratched harder, but his sleeve was bunching up weird and not helping. "Did anyone get a picture of what it actually looks like?" he asked, as he pulled his sleeve up to reveal the rash spreading all over his arm and scratched at it. "I think I remember seeing a few pictures of rashes in one of the books?"

"I haven't seen any pictures of it, but that rash you have there doesn't look too good," Peter said. "You should probably get over to town hall to get it checked out."

"YAAAAGH!!!" Sokka jumped backward, staring at his arm as if it was going to start eating his face. "I'm not going to die!!! I'm not going to die!!!" He crumpled into a little heap on the floor.

And then he sighed and stood up. "Right. Okay. It was nice hanging out with all of you guys, but I've got places to be."

"Need any help getting down there?" Peter asked.

Re: Afternoon

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nah, I'm fine," Sokka said, waving him off. "You just find that cure okay? If I die, I will PERSONALLY find you and kick your butt."

"Will do," Peter promised. "Good luck. Stay strong. We'll get this taken care of."

Rodney was back at the books as soon as he left his afternoon class. He was getting increasingly frustrated as time went on and no real progress was made. Seeing Sokka apparently fall ill significantly increased his panic. If his own roommate had gotten it, how much longer did he have left?
