Alternative Tactics, Wednesday Period One, 14/11

Lieutenant Sarah Kerrigan wasn't looking too hot today.

Which would be code for 'pale, glazed eyes, and sweat soaking clothes and hair alike'. With the occasional lean towards 'stumbling'.

"Today's supposed to be your exam, kids," she said, keeping her limbs as straight as they could, "A bunch of you are sick, which means you're not gonna be here to hear me tell you you'll get a make-up exam sometime when you're not sweating liquid death out your pores. The rest of you, we're squaring off against each other today. Pick a partner and a suit and let's exercise some tactics. You get your choice in assault types for this one; pick a Firebat suit for close combat flamethrowing, a stealth suit for sniping action, or be boring and grab the Marine suit with the big gun."

She activated the sim, then wobbled to her desk.

If anyone asked, she was just stalking off. Really.

Rikku shot Luke a concerned glance. "Hey," she said, eyebrows knitting a little. "Do you ... know ... what's going on?"

"I spent most of the night at the clinic," he said, nodding.

"I don't understand," she said quickly. "The radio ... it was just, oh, hey, flu season's here, at first, and then last night it sounded like half the town was in the clinic. So I thought, okay, that's weird, bad flu season, but some of the people look really sick, and everyone's got those huge bags under their eyes and ..." Rikku gestured uselessly.

Luke could've been saying "the sun fell out of the sky." Luke seemed about that stunned.

Rikku's breath caught, and then she scooted her seat closer to reach out and squeeze Luke. "It's okay," she said quickly. "It'll ... it's gonna be ..."

Words failed her.

"This ... this is s-something big, isn't it?"

Luke nodded numbly. "I'm going to the library after class. Then to the clinic. There's got to be a way to stop this."

He didn't finish the thought that if Anakin and all of his knowledge couldn't fix himself, he didn't know what chance he had. That wasn't helpful thinking.

"That's ..." Rikku nodded quickly. "The library. That's a great idea. Maybe ... maybe I'll go, too. I'm not as good as Hermione at research stuff but I know some sciencey things. That's gotta help, right?"

She squeezed him again. "Hey. We've got all of us. In Fandom, I mean. Lots of people who've dealt with all kinds of crazy stuff. We'll ... we'll fix this. Honest. It's gonna be okay."
