Library; Wednesday [ 11/07 ]

Adah came in a bit early so that she had plenty of time to limp around the library to choose her choice reading materials for the day. By the time things were set for the day, she had set aside an eclectic pile of medical journals and comic books, as well as a carefully balanced tower waiting to be sorted, although perhaps she'd leave that. She felt that the way some of the books jutted out and it curved and threatened to wobble over like trees too tall in the wind, creaking, moaning, dizzying to look up at.

Adah looked up toward the Eel with regret in her expression, drawing in a light breath, and then, decidedly, slid the notebook forward. Better sooner than later. What made it difficult was the complete cluelessness on her part as to what the response might be, so, this way, she could at least stop being curious.

"River Tam and I have slept together," the paper had been prepared to announce. "The probability that it will happen again is high. She felt you should know."

And then she blinked up at the Eel expectantly, face intentionally blank although the worry and possible guilt that she tried so hard to not believe in might betray her in her eyes. But at least she was straight forward, to the point. No dragging it out, beating around the bush.

"Oh," he said quietly, blinking a few times. "Oh. I, um. Do you...should I stop coming by? I don't...know what this means, you telling me that."

Adah shrugged a shoulder, uncertain of what it meant herself.

"She felt I should tell you," she repeated in the lines of her notebook. "So I did. A balance, because she knew about you. That's all it means."

"That's why she doesn't like me so frakking much," he muttered to himself and rubbed a hand over his face. Quietly, he said, "A balance. I didn't expect this today. And I'm not really sure what you need me to do here."

"Don't need you to do anything," Adah wrote after a worried look his way, "except what you want to do."

"Tell me," he said quietly, "knowing that I know this now, do you still want me to...be around?"

"Of course I do," Adah breathed out, even more quietly.

"All right," he said, tapping a finger against the desk and focusing on that. "Are you all right?"

Despite herself, a small smile surfaced over the fact that her eyes immediately followed the tapping of his fingers, drifting away long enough for her to realize she'd done it, and then going back to him slightly accusingly, mostly gratefully. She gave a clear, distinctive, though lopsided nod, before lifting an eyebrow at him, turning the question back around to him. Because that was more important to her, anyway.

"I don't not want to be around you," he said quietly. "It'd make me miserable."

Adah's hand crept a little along the desk, toward the Eel's hand, a finger reaching for his. "I wouldn't want that," she told him softly. "I especially wouldn't want it know that I'd be the cause."

"Mmmm," he said, watching her hand get closer and touched his finger to hers, a light brushing action that made him smile. "You don't make me miserable. You make me happy."

"I like having the privilege," Adah added, "of making you happy; I have to admit, I'd feel pretty sore about it if I had to stop."

"No need to stop," he said, moving his hand until he could clasp hers and bring it up so he could kiss her knuckles. "I'm not going to leave, I promise."

Adah's smile grew a little more; to think, she didn't even need to launch into her rhetoric regarding the puritanical and patriarchal. And, really, she couldn't have asked for a better response. Got a little worrisome at the beginning, but, if she wasn't mistaken, it almost seemed as thought he was worried that she...

She smiled, and leaned forward a little, closing her eyes as she surrendered her hand to the feeling of light kisses against her knuckles. "Good."

"You'll have to come see the stars again with me sometime," Lee said and pressed her knuckles to his cheek. "I need to read to you again too."

Adah shifted her hand enough to free her thumb so that she could lightly brush it against the cheek they were getting to know so well. There was a little bit to marvel at this time No hypersensitive nervous system on him, and he still enjoyed something simple like this from her... "I never did get to count the stars as intended," she pointed out.

"There were distractions," he said, closing his eyes and leaning a little more into her hand. "Good ones."

"You know," Adah teased lightly, "I'm usually much better at staying focused on a task, but you have an impressive knack for distraction."

"You're not the first person to tell me that," he said and smiled. "Possibly the first person to tell me that and mean it in a good way though."

"I didn't say it was a good thing," Adah made the attempt to lightly argue, but a small laugh that she couldn't help sort of thwarted her intentions a bit.

"Yes, you did," he teased back. "I could see it in your eyes. Your eyes said it was a very good thing. And also that you like my modeling. Your eyes are talkative today."

"They sound like liars, too," Adah offered with a grin. "You can't trust them. That modeling bit sounds very suspect."

"You don't trust your own eyes?" Lee asked, trying to sound shocked. "But they're so nice and pretty. I trust them."

"Nature gives the deadliest snakes the prettiest colors, you know," Adah warned him simply with a smile and a lift of her chin, watching as her thumb dragged slowly along his his cheekbone.
