Sam was finishing his breakfast - if a muffin from J,GOB could be called breakfast - on the way to the library, and trying not to drop the whole separate bag of books he needed to return.

"I'm sure our librarian will appreciate you keeping me in line," Sam teased. As he checked the books in, he gave Claire a curious look. "So, did you find the information you were looking for?" he asked, trying to keep his tone casual.

Claire shrugged.

"Kind of?" she offered, honest, not evasive. "I mean, they go on for ages about human history, but they don't talk about anything that might be going on now."

"I didn't realize there was a lot of evolution going on right now," Sam said. "I mean, I guess that process doesn't stop, but I don't imagine it being something noticeable."

"Why not?" Claire challenged. Then looking around to make sure they were alone, she lowered her voice. "I mean, what about people with powers?"

Onkly then did she remember she didn't need to lower her voice for that.

She may not have needed to lower her voice, but talking about powers wasn't something Sam tended to do at full volume anyway.

"Do you think that has to do with evolution?" Sam asked, getting thoughtful. "I guess it would make sense with some of the powers people have."

Claire sat down right next to Sam, to explain.

"There's this book I read," she said. "By this professor guy in New York. Something... Suresh. He said that little mutations were happening really quickly nowadays, and that human beingsare on the verge of a major evolutionary breakthrough.

"But no one wants to back him up."

"But you think he might be right?" Sam asked.

"Well, yeah," Claire said, and tapped the books. "These are all forgetting one thing. People can actually do these things."

"You mean, like Peter," he said, nodding.

After the tiniest pause, Claire nodded.

"Well, I wasn't thinking specifically of him, but yeah."

She looked for a minute like she was going to ask something, but broke herself off, mostly out of not knowing how to ask the question.

Sam had a question that he didn't know how to ask either, but he didn't want the conversation to lapse into an awkward silence, so he did the best he could.

"Were you thinking of--I mean, you're so interested in this stuff that I've just been wondering...do you have an ability? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

Well, that was better than awkward silence, but Claire would have rather talked about Peter.

She looked over her shoulder again, and lowered her voice even more.

"You can't tell anyone, OK?"

"I won't," Sam said quickly. "I promise. I'm a good secret keeper, just ask Peter."

She smiled quickly at that. "I know," she said. "He told me.

"Do you have a letter opener or something?"

One day she'd explain her ability without a demonstration. Not today, apparently.

"Uh, sure." Sam rifled through the lower part of the desk for a few moments, and came up with a letter opener. "Will this do?"

"Yeah."

Claire grinned sheepishly at him, and pulled her hands away from the books, before stabbing herself through the palm, grimacing in the pain.

"What the hell?" Sam yelled, trying to grab the letter opener from her before she could do that again.

"It's OK."

Claire let him have the letter opener, and held out her palm to him, as the hole closed up quietly.

"See?"

Sam stared, and reached over to touch her palm just to be sure that what he was seeing was real.

"Oh my God," he said. "That's awesome."

She grinned again, nearly laughing with relief, as she pushed her palm towards his fingers.

"It comes in useful."

"I can imagine. Does it hurt when you do that?" he asked.

Claire nodded.

"Yeah it does. But I get over it quickly."

"You just get over it?" Sam said, laughing softly. "That's amazing. You're so lucky." Being able to heal was definitely better than visions, as far as he was concerned.

Claire shrugged.

"Rather be normal."

"Why? I mean, I understand wanting to be normal, believe me. But I don't think I'd feel that way if I could do what you can do."
