Library [11/5]

Sam was finishing his breakfast - if a muffin from J,GOB could be called breakfast - on the way to the library, and trying not to drop the whole separate bag of books he needed to return.

Claire let him have the letter opener, and held out her palm to him, as the hole closed up quietly.

"See?"

Sam stared, and reached over to touch her palm just to be sure that what he was seeing was real.

"Oh my God," he said. "That's awesome."

She grinned again, nearly laughing with relief, as she pushed her palm towards his fingers.

"It comes in useful."

"I can imagine. Does it hurt when you do that?" he asked.

Claire nodded.

"Yeah it does. But I get over it quickly."

"You just get over it?" Sam said, laughing softly. "That's amazing. You're so lucky." Being able to heal was definitely better than visions, as far as he was concerned.

Claire shrugged.

"Rather be normal."

"Why? I mean, I understand wanting to be normal, believe me. But I don't think I'd feel that way if I could do what you can do."

"Because." Claire seemed to think that was enough. Almost.

"I'd just like to have a normal life. That's not really helped by being a freak."

"I don't think you're a freak," Sam said. "At least with your ability, you can try to have a normal life. For all outward appearances, you're normal, and that has to count for something?"

She gave him a smile when he said that, but shook her head.

"It's more complicated then that. There are - people interested in people like us."

"Interested like...bad interested?" Sam asked.

Claire nodded.

"At least one bad kind. I'd rather not find out about the others."

"No, I imagine you wouldn't. I'm sorry," he said. "I had no idea."

Claire shook her head.

"It's OK," she assured him. "Really."

"It's okay here. I mean, you're safe," he said. "Most people don't get the bad kind of interested here."

"Yeah, I know," she said.

"But I don't want you guys to get the bad kind of interest in you."

"The people here are stronger than you might think," Sam replied. "We can take care of ourselves if something bad comes."

"I know," Claire said. "I just think it's easier to keep it quiet."

"I promise, I won't tell anyone about what you can do. I get wanting to keep things quiet. I don't tell many people about my visions either."

That was when Sam remembered that he might not have mentioned that to Claire yet. Oops.

No, he hadn't.

"Visions?"

"Um, yeah," he said uneasily. "I have these visions sometimes, of the future. Usually bad things, like people who are going to get hurt. They don't happen much, and I can't control them, but..." he trailed off, unsure of what else to say.
