Ethics [Thursday, October 24, 1st period]

Today the class was meeting in the Danger Room.

It was not surprising that there wasn't a scrap of red velvet to be seen anywhere. It always wasn't a coincidence that today's class could get most of the students fake killed in nasty ways.

"Welcome to your midterm," Anakin said, pacing across the flight deck of a ship. Behind him, thousands of pricks of lights showed that a space battle had been paused for him to talk. "Today, you will get to be Jedi."

His eyes went flat. "Or try, anyway. Your mission," he said, striding over to a three-dimensional schematic of the ship, "is to rescue the Chancellor of the Republic, who has been kidnapped by a General Grievous, the leader of a Separatist movement. There's also another fearsome warrior aboard, a Lord of the Sith..." he glanced at Qui-Gon, "whose name doesn't matter."

And whose face would be mysteriously blurry when Qui-Gon fought against him. Anakin wasn't about to screw up timelines for a class assignment.

"Regardless. You will be paired up and rescue the Chancellor. Alive, please. Your mission is to fight past the droids, Grievous and the Sith Lord, get back on a different ship and the hell off of this one as quickly as possible."

He waved his hand towards the control panel. The students would now find themselves in brown robes and holding unlit lightsaber hilts. They would work like the real things, but only in the Danger Room.

Their reflexes, regrettably, were what they had come in with.

"Try not to die," Anakin said, then listed off the pairings:

River Tam - Irulan Corrino
Gavin Darklighter - Prue Halliwell
Edward Elric - Aravis Tarkheena
John Sheppard - Victor Von Doom
Gwynn Hood - Henry Jekyll
Qui-Gon Jinn - Jaina Solo

Aww, he looks so scared. And he says something about a Sith Lord behind you? That's probably not good....

The elevator opened and there weren't any droids around.

"So far, so good," Gavin said quietly.

"That's weird." Prue said. She kept herself on her guard anyways.

At the far end of the room, there was a man tied to a chair. "Please tell me that Sith Lords are your speciality," he said with a trembling little smile.

Gavin might recognize him.

"Wow," Gavin said when he realized who he was seeing. "Uh, not a specialty, sir, but hopefully we can help you."

Prue was a little confused since she didn't know who the guy was or what a Sith Lord was either.

"Let's get you out of those restraints." Prue said, trying to offer a small smile.

"Oh, I don't think that will be happening," said a silky voice from behind them. "Oh dear. Two Jedi. One lightsaber. What have they been teaching you?"

He flicked his fingers, intending to send the unarmed student flying into the nearest wall.

Well, this felt familiar. Prue hit the wall with a loud thump. She groaned and put her hand on her head.

Gavin hit the wall and groaned, blinking and trying to clear blurry vision.

"This is just embarrassing," Dooku said, extending his lightsaber and aiming for Gavin's head. "This is what they send to rescue the Chancellor?"

"Wait, wait!" Gavin said, extending his own arm and lightsaber. "Stop!"

Dooku smirked and brought the lightsaber down towards Gavin's neck.

The lights of the simulation came up.

"Well, that didn't work," Anakin commented dryly.

Prue's hand was still on the back of her head. She gave Gavin a sympathetic smile.

The elevator opened and Victor stepped out, satisfied that there didn't seem to be any battle droids here. "Watch out for danger," he ordered.

John made a face at Victor's back as he followed him off the lift. "Because my goal is to die a horrible death," he said sarcastically.

"Fortunately, that can be arranged," the man in the ridiculous cape said to him, then flicked his fingers out to send John careening--hard--into a wall.

John smacked into the wall and landed in a heap on the floor. He wasn't getting up right away, but he sure was cursing his own stupid foreshadowing.

"Once again he proves himself useless," Victor snarked. "And now I suppose we're to fight for the fate of that old man who likely only has a few years before he dies of old age anyway?"

"That would be the plan, yes," Dooku replied, igniting his lightsaber. "We are a little surly for a Jedi, aren't we? I thought young Skywalker had that market cornered."

Victor hadn't ignited his lightsaber yet. "Clearly he doesn't," Victor said. "My question is why? Clearly you're powerful. I would probably hold my own against you for a few minutes at best and I hold myself in very high regard. There's no way my idiot partner could defeat you alone after my death. And all this to save the life of a weak man who the galaxy would surely be better off if he were dead? New blood could take over with him out of the way. Why should I lay my life down for him?"

Over by the control panel, Anakin was watching this bi-play very carefully.

"That's not at all Jedi of you," Dooku said, raising an eyebrow. "They practically line up to sacrifice themselves for the common good."

"Perhaps I'm not much of a Jedi," Victor said, stepping forward, showing no aggressive intentions.

Hearing their conversation prompted John to attempt sitting up and calling out unhappily to Doom. "Victor! You're supposed to fight him, not join him!"

Victor finally ignited his lightsaber, raised it defensively, and jumped back. "You took long enough to get up, Sheppard! I either had to buy time until you woke up or get close enough to take him by surprise. I was almost there, too!"

Climbing to his feet, John unhooked his lightsaber and it roared to pretty pink life. "Sorry, I was a little busy getting a head wound."
