Ethics [Thursday, October 24, 1st period]

Today the class was meeting in the Danger Room.

It was not surprising that there wasn't a scrap of red velvet to be seen anywhere. It always wasn't a coincidence that today's class could get most of the students fake killed in nasty ways.

"Welcome to your midterm," Anakin said, pacing across the flight deck of a ship. Behind him, thousands of pricks of lights showed that a space battle had been paused for him to talk. "Today, you will get to be Jedi."

His eyes went flat. "Or try, anyway. Your mission," he said, striding over to a three-dimensional schematic of the ship, "is to rescue the Chancellor of the Republic, who has been kidnapped by a General Grievous, the leader of a Separatist movement. There's also another fearsome warrior aboard, a Lord of the Sith..." he glanced at Qui-Gon, "whose name doesn't matter."

And whose face would be mysteriously blurry when Qui-Gon fought against him. Anakin wasn't about to screw up timelines for a class assignment.

"Regardless. You will be paired up and rescue the Chancellor. Alive, please. Your mission is to fight past the droids, Grievous and the Sith Lord, get back on a different ship and the hell off of this one as quickly as possible."

He waved his hand towards the control panel. The students would now find themselves in brown robes and holding unlit lightsaber hilts. They would work like the real things, but only in the Danger Room.

Their reflexes, regrettably, were what they had come in with.

"Try not to die," Anakin said, then listed off the pairings:

River Tam - Irulan Corrino

John Sheppard - Victor Von Doom
Gwynn Hood - Henry Jekyll

"I'd like to see you try," John said, joining Victor to face Dooku.

"You will right now," Victor promised.

"This is all so tiresome," Dooku commented, reaching into the Force and tossing them both into walls.

Turns out Victor was very wrong. "Uff," he said as he hit the wall. When he hit the ground after bouncing off the wall, he realized that if there was any chance for success, it would actually require real teamwork. Fortunately, it wouldn't have to last long. And he knew exactly what to do.

Of course he did. He was von Doom.

"Sheppard, are you unconscious again?" he asked.

Smacking into the wall was quickly becoming one of John's least favorite activities. He groaned before responding to Victor's question. "Unfortunately I'm very much awake."

"Good," Victor said. "We will win this." His voice sounded completely confident. There was no doubt in his mind that they were going to be victorious. He rose to a knee and left his lightsaber on the ground. "Strike at his head. Do it quickly. Don't mess this up."

John was thankful his lightsaber was nearby. He grabbed it as he climbed back to his feet. Again. "Assuming I get the opportunity, I'm with you," he said, feeling cranky.

Not moving from his kneeling position, Victor folded his hands together, lining his top three fingers up perfectly and criss-crossing his ring and pinkie fingers with each other. In a near whisper he said, "I call forth the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak."

A red glow emanated from Victor's hands. He opened his hands into an open clamshell position and the red glow shot across the room at the Sith Lord, surrounding him and binding his limbs together.

Victor wouldn't be able to maintain the Crimson Bands for long and it was taking all of his concentration to pull this off, but if you didn't know a counter spell it would be long enough to hold even the most powerful opponent.

"Crimson Bands of what?" Dooku tried to move his arms and legs.

And couldn't.

"You will die slowly," he promised, eyes flashing.

Surprised that Victor's spell had worked, John hesitated only a moment before slashing at Dooku's head with the lightsaber as instructed.

"Well done!" Palpatine praised as Dooku collapsed in pieces. "Now let's get out of here."

Victor took a deep breath and picked up his lightsaber. "That's the first time I've attempted that spell in combat," Victor said, wiping sweat from his brow. "And I held a man that powerful." He looked terribly smug about this as he made his way over to the Chancellor. "Sheppard, free him from his restraints."

Right, because he was obviously the errand boy in this partnership. "I bet you're glad to be out of those," John said to the Chancellor, freeing him from the restraints. "Think you can walk?" The guy was pretty old looking.

"I believe so," Palpatine said, rubbing his wrists as the ship lurched dangerously. "Oh dear," he said, voice quavering.

Then gravity reversed itself.

"Oh crap!" John said as he smashed against the ceiling. "Oof! How many times do I need to hit a wall today?"

"As many times as that sadist Skywalker wants," Victor said after hitting the ceiling himself. He managed to pull himself to his feet and suggested, "Let's move before he can switch it again."

"Agreed," John muttered, standing up, yet again. He was going to have such a headache later. "Need any help, sir?" he asked the Chancellor.

"I'm quite well, young man," Palpatine said, moving much more quickly than he probably should have been able to. "Let's get to the elevator!"

Victor -- who had mere minutes ago written the Chancellor off as being days away from a fatal heart attack -- was intrigued by the old man's quickness. He hurried after him, heading toward the elevator, though."

They raced to the elevator, out into the hallway...and smack into a forcefield.

"Well, this could've been planned better," Palpatine said testily.

John, following behind, looked to Victor for answers, "And here I thought you had it all under control." He was just living up to his role of assistant.

"No, our professor has it under control and he seems to have an unnatural amount of disdain for us," Victor said. He turned his lightsaber on and stabbed the wall around the field, hoping to sever some important circuitry.

He made a lot of sparks but didn't hit anything useful.

Soon they were surrounded by destroyer droids.

Palpatine sighed heavily. "I suppose General Grievous wishes to see us."

For a moment his wise politician facade cracked. "If I end up killed, the Senate will be most unhappy."

"I guess we go see this Grievous fellow then," John said. "And how about we all try not to die." The old man was kinda creepy.
