"Fixed him," Peter said. He leaned against the front desk. "I took a chance and got healing to work. Which was kinda lucky since I've never practiced it, just been around people who do."
Peter found himself grinning back, though he tried to cover it by moving his hair out of his eyes. "Just once. Only a bruise. I'd want some practice before trying anything big. Or on someone who'd have to forgive me since I'm related to them."
"Like when he decides to put a hit out on me?" Sam said. He tried to make it sound like he was teasing, but there were parts of the previous day's conversation that he couldn't quite ignore.
"It's okay. I never thought he'd actually do something like that," Sam said. He waited for a moment, watching Peter. "But, hypothetically speaking, if he wanted to, could he do that?"
"Nathan's not a mobster," Peter replied. He continued not making eye contact because being raised around lawyers meant learning how to answer questions very specifically.
Peter's hair fell forward. He didn't push it back. "Our dad - he was a lawyer. One of his clients was this guy Linderman. He's pretty much the definition of connected."
"Oh wow," Sam said. "Did he ever...I mean, there's a difference between having a client who's connected, and having that client use his connections for you, right?"
"That's how he made his money," Peter said. "All the people Linderman had hurt - worse. Pop may have never pulled a trigger, but he sure as hell never stopped one either."
"Nathan never liked that part of Pop's work," Peter said. Since Sam knew that Nathan was the one the most like their father, Peter wanted to make the distinction clear. "He became a lawyer, but because he wanted to help people. And put guys like Linderman behind bars. Which... he was going to do. We both were."
