Sam was in a very good mood when he went to open the library this morning. It might just have something to do with classes being back in session.

"And that would have worked? And gotten your dad away from him?" Sam asked, intrigued.

"We were going to testify," Peter said, quietly. "Against Dad."

"But you changed your mind?"

Peter swallowed. When he spoke, his voice was rough. "Dad wasn't there to testify against anymore."

That certainly put an end to Sam's questions.

"Peter, I'm really sorry," he said. "I shouldn't have asked."

"Nathan's got his reasons for thinking he needs to protect our family," Peter said. "It's not just about his hopes for the White House."

Sam smiled softly. "President Petrelli. Now there's an idea."

Peter smiled that smile that only Nathan could cause. "He'd be good. 'course he'd need me around to keep him grounded."

"You can be a presidential adviser," Sam said. "And I'll be the friend you let come in and gaze in awe at the Oval Office."

"We can move his pens around just to annoy him," Peter said. "He notices. It's hilarous."

"We are definitely making this a plan," Sam said, before sobering for a moment. "I really am sorry, about your dad and all, and bringing this stuff up. My dad's not exactly squeaky clean either, so I'm in no position to pass judgment on anything your dad might have done."

"S'okay," Peter shrugged it off. "I just... I wanted you to know what Nathan's really like. Who my Nathan is, you know?"

"And now I know," Sam replied. "I'm just sorry your Nathan had to meet my Dean yesterday."

"Sorry Dean met him in big brother mode," Peter said. "That's kinda my fault. I told him about us and he kinda freaked."

And this would be Peter talking quickly, so he could rip the bandage right off of this conversation. "You know. Tell a guy his little brother got hit with a mysterious memory loss and for some reason it spooks him."

"I can't imagine why," Sam said, smirking softly. "Did he get freaked out when you told him what happened?"

"Mostly the memory part." Wow, did that countertop get fascinating all over again. "The part where apparently I like guys really didn't faze him."

It was probably a good thing Peter was looking at the counter with the way Sam stared. "Uh. That's good. That he wasn't really fazed by the second part," he said quickly, unable to put it in the same words Peter used. "Memory loss is a lot more serious, I think, even if it was temporary."

"Yeah, I managed to get him calmed down," Peter said. Really. Countertop. Fascinating. "He wanted to take me home but I told him I'm safer here where I can learn how to control my powers. And, uh, apparently he was expecting the rest. Well, that or a drug habit. Guess I should've told him there's still time for #2, huh?"

"Yeah, I mean, you could totally pick up a random drug habit here," Sam said. "But if you'd said that, he probably wouldn't have let you stay no matter what you said."

"I wonder how that would affect my powers?" Peter said, momentarily distracted by the thought. He shrugged it off. "Anyway. That's why Nathan was a little... Nathan with Dean. He found out about the amnesia and how you were affected too and I guess he figured putting on a show after the fact was the only way he could feel like he was protecting me. So it wasn't, you know, you. Specifically. With all that."

No, of course it wasn't, just like Sam thought.

"I see," he said simply. "Look, don't worry about the fight. Dean just rubs people the wrong way sometimes. They were both equally stupid, but it's all right now."

"Ditto," Peter said. "And... you can tell Dean what I told you. If you think it would help. Just, you know. Not about that one thing Nathan wants private."

"It might help, yeah. And I definitely won't mention the other thing," he said. "I remember my promises."

"I know you do." Peter smiled. "Thanks."

He noticed the time. "I should probably run to class. Catch you later?"

Sam nodded. "Yeah, I'll catch you later."
