Library [10/15]

Sam was aware that there were no classes this week, but that wasn't about to stop him from opening the library. If nothing else, it gave him a day to work without having to worry about leaving for anything.

"Oh, cool!" Ronan grinned. "Any kind of limits that you know of? Are you mimicking what you see, or...?"

"Not really sure why I can't copy some," Peter admitted. "But as far as I can tell I don't have to see it to do it. There was a while there I was copying powers and had no idea. Thought I was going nuts."

"... I can see how you might," Ronan said. "At any rate, I'd be surprised if you could copy mine -- it's mostly learned, after all, and the rest that's not is because of the Oath. It's not the kind of thing that transfers." He grinned. "But you're welcome to try some time."

Peter studied Ronan. "Glittery shirt, huh?"

Ronan shrugged. "Wouldn't be the first time I'd worn one," he said, cocking one eyebrow. He wondered if Peter would somehow be able to 'pick up' the Speech from him, able to use it to speak to his shirt.

Peter concentrated, then held his hand out near Ronan's shirt. Granted that he wasn't an expert on this yet, but something in his gut told him he didn't have this power.

Ah well. He improvised and called on Isabel's instead, giving Ronan a glittery stripe along his shirtsleeve. He wondered if Ronan would be able to tell that he'd cheated.

Ronan's raised eyebrow showed that, in fact, he was able to tell. "Whose power was that, then?" he asked, grinning. "Isabel's?"

Peter gave up with a grin. "Yeah. That obvious?"

He went to erase his handiwork. It was only polite after all.

"Probably not to anyone else," Ronan replied, shrugging, an amused smile on his face. "But I'd definitely be able to recognise wizardry, at least if it were wizardry like mine."

"So far I've been able to copy things like telekinesis, this thing of Isabel's - " Peter gestured with his hand to indicate what he'd just done " - some work with fire, strength, it's a mix."

"Huh. I wonder what the difference is," Ronan said. "Or if it just depends where the person's from or something or if there are just some powers you can't copy." He'd be thinking about this for a little while. "And you can use all the powers you've been exposed to?" he added. "What if you end up with two contradicting powers?"

"Try not to use them at once?" Peter guessed. "Gotta admit I'm still new to this. I've been trying to learn. It was only recently I figured out I can call up powers without having to be next to the person."

"Yeah?" Ronan added that to the list of things to consider. "Huh. That's... that's all really interesting," he said, sincerely. "Any idea where your powers come from?"

"No clue," Peter said. "I just had this hunch like something special was going to happen. One day it did."

Ronan laughed. "Sounds a lot like wizardry, that. 'One day, something happened.' It's how it always starts."

"So you're not born being able to do it?" Peter asked.

"No," Ronan said, shaking his head. "You have to be the right kind of person, in the right position, and then you're offered wizardry. Usually around twelve or thirteen, sometimes a little older, very rarely younger. Once you're sixteen or seventeen, though, you're really too old to start."

"So you could've turned it down," Peter said.

"Some people do," Ronan said; his eyes went distant for a moment, his voice a bit softer. "But no, I don't think I could have."

Peter looked interested. "Felt like being a hero?"

He didn't sound as though he thought that was a bad thing.

"That was part of it," Ronan said, "but... it was less about being a hero, and more about... it was just the right thing to do." He grinned. "Besides, how else was I going to see other worlds?"

Peter grinned back. "I kinda understand where you're coming from. That's why I'm here. I wanted to learn how to be somebody. Somebody special. I felt like I had to."

Ronan gave Peter an appraising look. "I wonder," he said, then paused a moment. "I wonder, if you came from my world, if you'd not be a wizard yourself."

Peter shrugged. "Maybe? Heck if I know what I am for my world. So far all we've got is 'different'."

"There's nothing wrong with different," Ronan said, shrugging, a smirking smile gracing his face. "Looks pretty good from where I'm standing, anyway."
