Communication, Thursday, Period 5 (Week 6)

Hades was in the classroom when everyone arrived. "Hey, how ya doin? Hades, Lord of the Underworld, God of the Dead, Vice Principal and," the corner of his lip curled up. "Substitute teacher. Today you're going to learn the art of obfuscation. There is nothing in this world - NOTHING - that can be said that can't be confused and twisted to the point where no one understands what the heck you're on about.

Politicians and lawyers do it all the time. If it's not worth being a soundbyte, obfuscate it to the point where people don't care what you do as long as you shut up. Get it? For example, the question could be 'do you agree that the school's security staff is acceptable?'. The answer to that would be 'if you ask me for a straight answer, then I'll say that, as far as I can see, looking at it by and large, taking one thing with another in terms of the average of departments, then in the final analysis it is probably true to say, that at the end of the day, in general terms, you would probably find that, not to put too fine a point on it, there probably wasn't very much in it one way or the other as far as one can see, at this stage.' Huh? Huh? That was a doozy.

Now you try it. Team up. Someone ask a simple question like 'what's your favorite color?' and someone else answer it being as a much of a pain in the rear as possible. Go on. Do it. Don't bother me."

There was a long moment before Chris realized that Andrew had started the assignment.

And started it rather well.

Chris smirked. "So if I write a contract asking you to work with me on this project, you'll do it?"

"Well that's the thing about written contracts, isn't it? I mean, being that Fandom exists in a dimensional nexus and is kind of like a confluence of many, many points of countless dimensions in this one place, how can we decided what set of governing laws would apply to our compact here today? And if we did chose one set, is it to be the same set tomorrow or is the nature of the nexus such that all these rules and constraints would be in constant flux, ever switching and ever increasing and decreasing in import and weight? And furthermore, who is to be pinnacle person who would decide if one party is in breach or, if needed, to rule on if an infraction has occurred at all? In short, it's a very lofty idea that's been floated."

Andrew was quite enjoying this assignment.

"What's your take on the situation?"

This was a pretty fun assignment.

"It seems to me that the situation is much larger than we initially expected. It really isn't just about you and me and this assignment. Anything we do would clearly set a precedent for generations to come to follow and we really do need to think carefully about our course of action and the long-term implications of our decisions."

"Exactly!"

Andrew smiled and then said, "Those are cute shoes. Where did you get them?"

Chris blinked cause that was kind of random and weird.

He looked down at his feet. "Well, I think shoe buying is a matter of personal preference and there are many options one should consider before buying shoes, including the cost and likely longevity of wear they will get out of the shoes. And shoes may look good on one person and not on another, so it's important to try for oneself and not base your decision on where to buy shoes on what someone else is wearing."

Andrew nodded. Chris was pretty good at this as well.

"But at what point does morality come into play with your shoe choice, or, for that matter, clothing options in general. Is there a certain level of fashion at which point the slaughter of animals for say leather or fur lining becomes social acceptable, or should the whole industry be scrapped altogether? Keeping in mind, of course, that scrapping it would have major economical implications on third world countries that rely on the fur trade for the bulk of their gross national product - Canada for instance."

"Well, if you're going to bring Canadian politics into it, you really have to address the recent border patrol issues," Chris said.

Yeah, he really didn't know anything about Canadian politics.
