Communication, Thursday, Period 5 (Week 6)

Hades was in the classroom when everyone arrived. "Hey, how ya doin? Hades, Lord of the Underworld, God of the Dead, Vice Principal and," the corner of his lip curled up. "Substitute teacher. Today you're going to learn the art of obfuscation. There is nothing in this world - NOTHING - that can be said that can't be confused and twisted to the point where no one understands what the heck you're on about.

Politicians and lawyers do it all the time. If it's not worth being a soundbyte, obfuscate it to the point where people don't care what you do as long as you shut up. Get it? For example, the question could be 'do you agree that the school's security staff is acceptable?'. The answer to that would be 'if you ask me for a straight answer, then I'll say that, as far as I can see, looking at it by and large, taking one thing with another in terms of the average of departments, then in the final analysis it is probably true to say, that at the end of the day, in general terms, you would probably find that, not to put too fine a point on it, there probably wasn't very much in it one way or the other as far as one can see, at this stage.' Huh? Huh? That was a doozy.

Now you try it. Team up. Someone ask a simple question like 'what's your favorite color?' and someone else answer it being as a much of a pain in the rear as possible. Go on. Do it. Don't bother me."

Andrew tried to take notes. Then he just gave up and started doodling.

John found himself staring at the flame on the VP's head. It was mesmorizing after a long day of classes.

Andrew's face was scrunched up in confusion.

Chris had a fairly similar expression on his face.

"So, uh, you wanna work together?"

Andrew looked at Chris. Was he already starting the assignment?

He cleared his throat. "Having consulted the cards this morning and having discovered the six of cups among their spread, taking into account, of course, that Jupiter is also currently rising, that would lead me to think that partnerships should be secured and defined by contractual agreements written in ink and not just through a spoken words, but of course there is also a natural propensity in such times to allow things to roam freely and take what you can get from life in general."

Andrew smiled as though everything he had just said made perfect sense.

There was a long moment before Chris realized that Andrew had started the assignment.

And started it rather well.

Chris smirked. "So if I write a contract asking you to work with me on this project, you'll do it?"

Jeff could do this. Jeff could really really do this.

He was grinning like an idiot.

Cassandra Cain.

Cassandra, on the other hand, totally couldn't do this. She had trouble asking simple questions. Giving complicated and obfuscatory answers? Well beyond her current conversational skills.

Unless Jeff happens to be fluent in body language...

Cassandra was used to being able to talk rather well with her communications teacher. Perhaps foolishly she simply assumed that the substitute was able to read body language too.

She lifted a hand in a wave, adopting a stance expressing that it's nice to meet him.

Jeff gave Cassandra the thumbs up.

He may have flailed a little while he was doing it. And grinned like an idiot.

One of her eyebrows rose doubtfully, "You okay over there?"

Carmela spends most of the lecture practicing the written form of the Speech.
